Hype and hope the poker of the heavyweight scene

By Daniel Hughes: The heavyweight picture is soon about to change with former WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko fighting a political career that may turn out to be tougher even than what he experienced during his ring career. So we are left with Wladimir Klitschko. The 37 year old may not be too long in following his elder brother into retirement, as he openly admits the motivation to keep going is probably harder than the challenges in front of him.

Deontay Wilder is it just hype?

wilder-destroys-firtha - Copy (2)By Euan Gilchrist: Why I am looking forward to Deontay Wilder getting a crack at the world heavyweight championship. It’s easy to understand why people are excited by Wilder; he’s tall, charismatic, well put together and has an unblemished 100% KO record. But for all of his star qualities I have my doubts about just how good he is. I’ve seen him fight in the flesh once when he dismantled Audley Harrison at the same time as doing an impression of a windmill.

It’s fair to say that Harrison is the biggest name on Wilder’s record. It’s also indisputable that for the past 10 years Harrison has been the biggest laughing stock in British boxing. He’s had more comebacks than James Toney’s had cheeseburgers and has been beat by guys who shouldn’t have been able to lace his boots in Micheal Sprott, Martin Rogan and a very fat Danny Williams. Audley was the master of talking himself into big fights, making a fool of himself then getting another chance.

A busy Spring for the Heavyweight Division: Adamek-Glazkov, Wilder-Scott, More!

deontay73872By MikeS: Right on the heels of a heavyweight packed card featuring Derek Chisora, Tyson, and Hughie Fury, the division is just heating up for Spring. There are five great match-ups in the books with another couple on the way soon. There are crossroads match ups, classic boxer vs. puncher, as well as young fighters coming up and trying to make their mark on the division. Lets take a look at these match-ups.

Saturday, March 15th will give us a look at 2 exciting possibilities. The first pairing is former World Title Challenger Tomasz Adamek 49(29)-2 vs. young Vyacheslav ‘Czar’ Glazkov 16(11)-0-1 on NBCSN. The pair were supposed to face in November, but the fight was delayed because of an illness suffered by Adamek, and while Glazkov stayed busy and scored a workman-like but unimpressive win over former cruiserweight Garrett Wilson 13-6-1, Adamek has been inactive since his unanimous decsion win over game but faded Dominick Guinn 34-9-1 last August.

As you can see, John Medieiros described Tyson Fury and Dereck Chisora’s fights last Saturday night as being boring, and it’s hard to disagree with that.

Deontay Wilder: I’m stronger and more athletic than Malik Scott

deontay5465By Scott Gilfoid: While his important fight against Malik Scott (36-1-1, 13 KO’s) is still two months away, unbeaten heavyweight contender Deontay Wilder (30-0, 30 KO’s) is already discussing the March 15th match-up with him scheduled at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, Bayamon, Puerto Rico. The 6’7″ Deontay has already sparred with Malik in the past in getting IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko ready for one of his important fights against Mariusz Wach.

Deontay got a feel for Scott’s power, and he came away impressed with his skills, but also feeling like he had the edge in the power and hand speed department,. Deontay freely admits that Malik had more skills than him, but he feels that his advantages in speed and power more than offset Malik’s sills advantage.

Malik Scott confirms Deontay Wilder fight in March

chisora106By Scott Gilfoid: Heavyweight talent Malik Scott (36-1-1, 13 KO’s) has confirmed that he’ll be facing unbeaten knockout artist Deontay Wilder (30-0, 30 KO’s) next March in a fight that could take place on March 15th. The fight makes sense for both fighters. Deontay, #3 WBC, #4 WBO, #5 WBA, #12 IBF, keeping busy while waiting for the dust to clear between the fight between Chris Arreola vs. Bermane Stiverne in April for the vacant WBC heavyweight title.

Deontay makes no secret to his desire to face the winner of that fight. Of course, Deontay wouldn’t turn down a title shot from IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko if that fight were offered to him before then.

Deontay Wilder: Fighter or Fraudster, and a look at Jennings, Szpilka and Fury.

deontay899By Olly Campbell: They say that variety is the spice of life, so in keeping with a few of the comment thread suggestions, I’m today going to turn my focus away from British fights/fighters, and write about a subject from across the pond. I enjoy debate and controversy, so needed someone that I believed could get my fellow fans talking.

Now, much like his rival Tyson Fury, the name Deontay Wilder only need be mentioned to spew forth a plethora of comments, some hyping, some hating. With all of my articles I try to state the facts, pepper them with a little opinion and let my fellow fans draw their own conclusions. I have also been asked a couple of questions regarding Wilder and both British and American heavyweight talent, so as we progress, I shall do my best to nail everything.
