deontay73872By MikeS: Right on the heels of a heavyweight packed card featuring Derek Chisora, Tyson, and Hughie Fury, the division is just heating up for Spring. There are five great match-ups in the books with another couple on the way soon. There are crossroads match ups, classic boxer vs. puncher, as well as young fighters coming up and trying to make their mark on the division. Lets take a look at these match-ups.

Saturday, March 15th will give us a look at 2 exciting possibilities. The first pairing is former World Title Challenger Tomasz Adamek 49(29)-2 vs. young Vyacheslav ‘Czar’ Glazkov 16(11)-0-1 on NBCSN. The pair were supposed to face in November, but the fight was delayed because of an illness suffered by Adamek, and while Glazkov stayed busy and scored a workman-like but unimpressive win over former cruiserweight Garrett Wilson 13-6-1, Adamek has been inactive since his unanimous decsion win over game but faded Dominick Guinn 34-9-1 last August.

Glazkov’s only non victory was a much disputed draw against contender Malik Scott while Adamek has strung together 5 straight victories since his one-sided beating at the hands of Vitali Klitschko. The second, and marquee matchup pits WBC #3 Deontay Wilder 30(30)-0 against fringe contender Malik Scott 36(13)-1-1 live on Showtime from the Danny Garcia undercard in Puerto Rico. This is a very important step up for both fighters, as Malik Scott failed his first test against rated competition when he lost by controversial TKO to Derek Chisora back in July, and sensational Deontay Wilder will see his first “live opponent”. No-one has gone past 4 rounds with the Bronze Bomber and it will be interesting to see the finesse vs. power match-up.

In a top ten IBF match-up March 22, from Istanbul, Turkey IBF #8 Tony ‘The Tiger’ Thompson 38(26)-4 will face once beaten IBF#5 Odlanier Solis 20(13)-1 . Thompson is regarded as an unofficial gatekeeper to the belts, after 2 losses in mandatory title challenges Thompson proved too much to handle for the rising David Price two times. Thompson then lost a UD to IBF#1 Kubrat Pulev in a fight where he looked his age down the stretch, but Solis, who’s only defeat came by bizarre 1st round TKO to Vitali Klitschko is always seen as an underachiever despite his skill, because of his flabby midsection. Look for the winner of this to be in an IBF eliminator this year.

Saturday, April 4th from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania live on NBCSN; Amir ‘Hardcore’ Mansour 20(15)-0 will face former 2 time Cruiserweight Champion Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham 26(12)-6 in his first televised fight since his TKO loss to Tyson Fury back in April of last year. Mansour has defeated the likes of Dominick Guinn, and most recently Kelvin Price in his late blooming career. At 43 will Mansour prove that he is a force to be reckoned with, or will Cunningham’s skill and speed see him work his way into a bigger payday? This is a classic boxer vs. puncher match-up that WILL entertain.
