barth2by Bill Mitchell: Friday night fights broadcast their season debut last night live on ESPN from The Magic City Casino in Miami, Fl. The main event featured two undefeated junior lightweight contenders Rances Barthelemy (17-0, 11 KOs) and Arash Usmanee (20-0,10 KOs). And here’s where the controversy ensues.

Barthelemy , a tall, technically correct left-hander who fights conventional was expected to be Cuba’s next professional star after winning three impressive victories last year. He was the expected favorite. However undefeated Afghanistan-born Canadian resident Arash Usmanee, a tough stalker with power and brawling skills had a different mindset. In a pre-fight interview he said “I am an aggressor with good technique, and this coming Friday you’ll see a great fight.”

Abril battles Bogere for vacant WBA lightweight title on March 2nd

abril545By Jason Kim: Two high quality fighters Richard Abril (17-3-1, 8 KO’s) and Sharif Bogere (23-0, 15 KO’s) will go at it for the vacant WBA lightweight title on March 2nd in the United States. The venue still isn’t decided yet but it will shortly. This is the WBA strap that previously belonged to Brandon Rios. However, Rios failed to make weight and was stripped of the title. Rios has since moved u to light welterweight, leaving the WBA title available to Abril and Bogere.

Abril hasn’t fought since losing to Rios last year in April by a 12 round split decision. Abril fought remarkably well and you can say that he did well enough to deserve the win but two of the judges saw it differently. Abril hasn’t done anything since then and that’s unfortunate because he’ll have been out of the ring for 11 months by the time he does eventually fight Bogere.

Quality Judging is the Foundation of Any Sport

By Robert Dean: There’s a lot of injustice in this world, and it always infuriates people. When you think of the most memorable moment of this year’s NFL season, it has to be the end-zone play in the Seattle-Green Bay game, that cost all the replacement refs their jobs. Even people who don’t watch football were talking about it the next day. This was all because the NFL was too cheap to hire good referees. Without superb refereeing, the results of the sport lose their legitimacy.

Freddie Roach has often been quoted on his initial conversations with Alex Ariza when the latter joined team Pacquiao in 2008 as the boxers strength and conditioning coach saying “Don’t F**k up his speed!!!”

r3By Ed Hoyle: Over the past five years, Britain has produced an unprecedented nucleus of raw talented boxers. The current up and coming stable of fighters seemingly destined to one day grace the American canvas; Carl Frampton , David Price and Billy Joe Saunders have understandably stolen the limelight on the back of their amateur pedigree and explosive starts to their respective professional crusades. However, there are some fighters that occasionally slip under the promoter’s and therefore fan’s radar – meet Mark Coombs.

Schooled in Portsmouth as an amateur, Coombs’ excelled to amass an exceptional amateur record, which included winning the boxer-of-the-tournament award in the prestigious Haringey Box Cup 2010. Larry Merchant to call his final fight this Saturday, December 15th

Image: Larry Merchant to call his final fight this Saturday, December 15thBy Eric Thomas: HBO analyst Larry Merchant, 81, will reportedly be calling his final fight for HBO this Saturday night when he works the Nonito Donaire vs. Jorge Arce fight at the Toyota Center, in Houston, Texas on December 15th. Merchant, who has been working for HBO for 35 years, says he’s not retiring which kind of makes it a little confusing.

From what I understand, he’ll possibly pop in to work an occasional big fight, like Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao, but as far as him working steadily like he’s done for years, that’s what he won’t be doing anymore.
