Pacquiao-Mayweather has to happen in 2013

Image: Pacquiao-Mayweather has to happen in 2013By Tom Drury: I will start this article by saying what a great fight we as fans witnessed on Saturday night between former eight division champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao and Juan “El Dynamita” Marquez. Once again these two fighters put on a show that will never be forgotten by the boxing world. Pacquiao and Marquez exchanged leather three times previously. The first bout ending in a draw and second fight ending in controversial decisions in favour of Pacquiao.

The fourth installment didn’t seem to catch the imagination of the fans, trainers and analysts. Sure they would be seeing a repeat of a controversial decision or a lack lustre performance by Pacquiao, who in the minds of most people involved in boxing, was on the decline. Pacquiao was arguably back to his dynamic best last Saturday night, notably so was “El Dynamita”, which made for a fantastic fight ending with a sight most thought we would never see.

Beltran defeats Kim; Magdaleno decisions Arrellano

Image: Beltran defeats Kim; Magdaleno decisions ArrellanoBy Jim Dower: Earlier tonight on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights, NABF lightweight champion Raymundo Beltran (27-6, 17 KO’s) successfully defended his title in beating Ji-Hoon Kim (24-8, 18 KO’s) by a 10 round unanimous decision at the Mirage Hotel & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. The final judges’ scores were 98-92, 98-92 and 97-94, all for the 31-year-old Beltran.

It wasn’t an easy win for Beltran, however, as Kim really took the fight to him and was able to score some big shots in almost every round. Kim knocked Beltran down hard in the 1st round with a nice left hand. However, Kim got a little ahead of himself while trying to finish Beltran off and ran into a hard left hand that stunned him.

McGuigan hoping Flintoff hangs up the gloves

Image: McGuigan hoping Flintoff hangs up the glovesBy Scott Gilfoid: Barry McGuigan is hoping the former England cricketer Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff (1-0) will hang up the gloves after a successful pro debut where he defeated Richard Dawson by a 4 round points decision. The heavyweight prospect Flintoff, not young at 34, looked slow, weak and wild as he attacked in what appeared to be a Joe Calzaghe-like fighting style.

Flintoff got knocked down in the 2nd round by one of the few punches that the rounded Dawson threw in the fight, and you have to wonder whether Flintoff would have lasted even 1 round had he been in an opponent that actually threw punches instead of just backing up the entire fight the way Dawson did.

Eubank Jr. defeats Pryce

Image: Eubank Jr. defeats PryceBy William Mackay: Unbeaten middleweight prospect Chris Eubank Jr. (8-0, 3 KO’s) defeated Bradley Pryce (30-12, 18 KO’s) by an 8 round points decision on the Tyson Fury vs. Kevin Johnson undercard on Saturday night at the Odyssey Arena, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom. The referee Steve Gray scored the fight 80-73.

The fight was a lot closer than that, however, as the 31-year-old Pryce was able to land a lot of hard shots all throughout the fight. Eubank Jr landed a lot of punches and looked good, but his power wasn’t all that impressive. Pryce looked like the harder puncher of the two, but he wasn’t able to land enough of his shots to get the win.

Dawson stopped punching after he knocked Flintoff down: Why?

Image: Dawson stopped punching after he knocked Flintoff down: Why?By Scott Gilfoid: If you watched heavyweight prospect Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff (1-0) make his pro debut last night against Richard Dawson (2-1, 1 KO’s) in Manchester you’re probably wondering about why Dawson failed to go after Flintoff after knocking him down with a sharp left hand in the 2nd round. I’ve seen the fight now four times and I still can’t understand why Dawson didn’t throw any punches after knocking Flintoff down.

Normally a fighter goes after an opponent once they’ve got them down on the canvas, but not Dawson. He didn’t throw many shots before the knockdown, but after the knockdown it was like water being turned off on a faucet. Dawson stopped throwing almost entirely, and I’m still wondering what happened with the guy?

Flintoff vs. Dawson tonight: Look for Freddie to get knocked out cold

Image: Flintoff vs. Dawson tonight: Look for Freddie to get knocked out coldBy Scott Gilfoid: Former British cricketer Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff will be making his pro debut tonight against 23-year-old American Richard Dawson (2-0, 1 KO’s) on a scheduled 4 round fight at the Manchester Arena, in Manchester, UK on the Denton Vessell vs. Ronnie Heffron card.

Flintoff, who resembles a skinny beanpole, is going to find out the hard way tonight why it’s not a good idea for an athlete to suddenly change sports and turn pro without an amateur background. That’s not how you do it, and I expect Flintoff to get knocked out cold tonight.

Remembering a true boxing great Hector “Macho” Camacho

By Sebastian Hernandez: In the sport boxing few men are remembered. Those few are not only immortalized by their outstanding records or unbeaten streaks but by their skill, perseverance, pride, and courage in the ring. One such boxer who possessed these qualities in excess was one of the best boxers Puerto Rico has ever blessed us with. I speak of none other than Hector Macho Camacho.
