Schaefer: Canelo cannot go lower than 154 for a Mayweather fight

canelo1By Dan Ambrose: If Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) decides he wants to fight WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) then he can forget all about having the fight take place at welterweight for his 147 lb. WBC title, and he can also forget about the fight taking place at a catchweight of 150 lbs. to meet halfway, because Canelo can’t go before 154, says his promoter Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions.

I would normally be highly suspicious at hearing a promoter say something like this, but given that Canelo rehydrated up to 172 pounds for his last fight against WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout last month, I totally believe Schaefer that Canelo simply can’t get below 154. He’s barely making weight at 154 before rehydrating up nearly 20 pounds to light heavyweight.

Who’s next for Floyd Mayweather Jr?

floyd#22By Gerardo Granados: After his dominant performance against the WBC welterweight mandatory challenger Robert Guerrero last Saturday night there´s only five fights left in the multimillion dollar contract for Floyd Mayweather Jr., and the question to ask is who´s next in line for “Money”? Don´t expect him to fight any dangerous contender but instead a big name that can sale on pay per view.

On times the rankings make no sense but it is not Mayweather Jr´s fault to have defended his WBC welterweight strap against little known Ghost Guerrero. It is not possible to give a definitive list because if a fighter wins or lose he can secure or lost his chance of a big payday. Maybe fame and a big fan base will be decisive to land a fight against Floyd.

Deontay Wilder will be the Heavyweight champion!

wilder364By Tony Crooks: When I first watched undefeated heavyweight contender Deontay Wilder (28-0, 28 KO’s), I thought, here is another fighter that has a padded out record fighting people that are not capable of defending themselves.

I recently viewed as many fights of Wilders that I could find. Yes, the opposition was not the best that boxing has to offer, but having said that, he has a very special talent which I have never seen in a boxer in my life.

Boxers work off the jab to set up the right hand, right uppercut or right cross, visa versa if you are a southpaw.

Mayweather needs to fight Pacquiao to boost his PPV totals

floyd#21By Allan Fox: With the rumors floating around that Floyd Mayweather Jr’s pay per view totals for his fight against Robert Guerrero being far less than projected for their pay per view bout last Saturday night on Showtime, it might be in Mayweather’s best interest to give one last attempt at putting together a fight between him and Manny Pacquiao for early 2014, before Pacquiao gets beaten again.

Just by arranging the fight with Pacquiao for next year, Mayweather will bump up his next fight’s PPV totals against whoever they pick out in September.

Bute suffers hand injury, fight with Pascal postponed

bute56By Scott Gilfoid: The May 25th HBO split site doubleheader with former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (31-1, 24 KO’s) facing former WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal (27-2-1, 16 KO’s) and IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch vs. WBA champion Mikkel Kessler has taken hard hit today with the news that the 33-year-old Bute suffered an injury to his left hand, according to the Montreal Gazette.

The injury is bad enough to make it necessary for him to postpone his fight with Pascal until a later date. Bute injured his left hand while training for his fight against Pascal at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.

Mayweather-Guerrero PPV numbers look bad, says Rafael

mayweather3422By Allan Fox: Last Saturday night’s pay per view bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) and Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-2-1, 18 KO’s) on Showtime at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, are said to have been really bad, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.

He’s reporting that the PPV numbers are under 1 million buys. This means that Showtime lost a lot of money on this PPV card, says Rafael. The card needed to bring in between 1.1 to 1.2 million buys to break even.

Mikey Garcia vs. Juan Manuel Lopez on June 15th in Dallas, Texas

garcia22By Dan Ambrose: WBO featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (31-0, 26 KO’s) will be making his first defense of his title next month against former two-division world champion Juan “Juanma” Manuel Lopez (33-2, 30 KO’s) on June 15th at the American Airlines Center, in Dallas, Texas, USA.

This is a potentially tough fight for the 25-year-old Garcia because he was kind of exposed in his last fight against Orlando Salido last January in which Garcia had started running out of gas by the 4th round and looked like he wanted out of the fight by the 8th.

Luckily for Garcia, he got his way out of the fight when an accidental headbutt broke his nose. Rather than toughing it out like many fighters do when they suffer a broken nose, Garcia complained that he couldn’t breathe out of his nose, which is a fairly common thing for a fight with a broken nose. That’s just how it is, but the fight was stopped anyway.

Roach wants Pacquiao to KO Rios to pay him back for mocking him

roach4523By Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach has another reason why he wants his fighter Manny Pacquiao to knockout Brandon Rios in their fight on November 23rd in Macau, China.

Rios was videotaped doing a poor imitation of Roach three years ago in which Rios was shaking in apparent mock of Roach’s Parkinson disease problem. It didn’t go over well with many boxing fans, and it clearly rubbed Roach the wrong way, although he says it didn’t really bother him all that much.

Roach said to ESPN’s Dan Rafael “They were trying to get under my skin, and they can do what they want. They can do all the shaking they want…this fight is going to be a great payback for me. I can’t wait for the fight. It’s the fight I wanted for Manny.”

Floyd Mayweather’s last 30 months of his career

floyd#20By Gleam: After silencing critic’s last Saturday by dismantling a game opponent in his prime, Floyd Mayweather is resting and nursing the right hand he injured from hitting Robert Guerrero’s face. If you happened to spot ANY ring rust PLEASE share in the comment box. Moving along, I highly doubt we’re going to see a Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Floyd fight in September. It’s too early in his contract for him to take that type of risk. I see IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander in Floyd’s near future.

Kell Brook just withdrew from the fight with Devon and I doubt Lee Purdy will win the upset in their fight this month on May 19th, so mayweather will bless him next. After the Alexander/Mayweather snooze fest, I can see Mayweather giving Tim Bradley a shot if he wins against Juan Manuel Marquez in their fight on September 14th.

Who’s to blame for the Top Rank – Golden Boy Promotions mess?

By Bashar Khaddage: If there is one figure that I absolutely despise in the sport of boxing, its gotta be promoter Bob Arum. Top Rank, being one of the largest promotional boxing companies and with arguably the largest stable of relevant fighters headed by Bob Arum, has allowed him to have an iron grip on the sport. While the Harvard educated business man is definitely making tons of money (net worth valued at 200 million dollars), he’s the man that I blame for making the talent stacked light welterweight (140) & welterweight (147) divisions shy from what they can potentially be.
