Mayweather – The Final Five

mayweather4532By Nayal Khan: With Floyd Mayweather Jr’s Showtime/CBS 6-fight contract already underway with a bang, here’s a closer look at the likely 5 remaining opponents:

Next fight for Sept ’13 – is likely to be a rematch with Miguel Cotto. It’s next to impossible for Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to get the fight and especially after throwing a hissy fit in refusing to take part in the Mayweather – Robert Guerrero undercard. I would expect Canelo to be sidelined until 2015 i.e. the back end of Mayweather’s 6 fight commitment. It is also impossible for any fights to happen with Top Rank’s fighters for obvious reasons that include Showtime/ HBO and Golden Boy/ Top Rank rivalry… so bye bye Tim Bradley and Manny Pacquiao (for now).

Hopkins wants Froch later this year in the UK if he beats Kessler

hopkins2By Scott Gilfoid: IBF light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins (53-6-2, 32 KO’s) says he wants to fight IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (30-2, 22 KO’s) later this year in the UK provided that Froch gets past WBA super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (46-2, 35 KO’s) in their fight this month on May 25th at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

Hopkins said to the Dailymail.co.uk “Froch is on top of my wish list…our styles would make for a great fight. I will happily go over to the UK to make it happen but of course Carl will have to beat Kessler first. I am rooting for him to do it and I think he will win this time.”

Is Pacquiao vs. Rios a PPV worthy bout?

pac555PacquiaoBy Chris Williams: On November 23rd, Manny Pacquiao will be facing Brandon Rios in a fight that will be televised on HBO pay per view from Macau, China. There still isn’t a price listing for U.S boxing fans, but if history is any guide the fight will likely be shown for $59.99 and likely higher for HD.

With both guys coming off of losses, and Pacquiao having lost his last two fights, how is it that this fight is on PPV?

Chavez Jr. wants Martin Murray on August 3rd in Mexico City, Mexico

chavez jr5454By Scott Gilfoid: Well, it looks like Martin Murray’s recent 12 round unanimous decision loss to WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez won’t be hurting him as badly as some people thought it would. Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) is interested in fighting Murray on August 3rd in Mexico City, Mexico, according to Mexican news.

This would be a fight where both guys are coming off of losses, as Chavez Jr. was soundly beaten by a a relatively healthy Sergio Martinez last year in September by a 12 round unanimous decision.

Murray fought Martinez last month on April 27th and lost a 12 round decision at the Club Atlético Vélez Sarsfield, Buenos Aires, Distrito Federal, Argentina.

canelo342By Allan Fox: WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. said he’s not sure who he’ll fight in September, but he’s not ruling out a fight with WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, a fighter that many boxing fans want to see Mayweather fight.

Mayweather said this to ESPN in response to whether he’d be interested in fighting Saul Alvarez: “They’re always throwing names at me. Like I said before, everyone wants to fight Floyd Mayweather. It’s like a lottery ticket.

Rios-Pacquiao to take place at 147 lbs on HBO PPV

rios1By Chris Williams: Former WBA lightweight champion Brandon Rios won’t have to worry about having to strip off a lot of water weight for his next fight against Manny Pacquiao on November 23rd in their fight at the Venetian Maco Resort Hotel in Macau, China.

The fight will take place at 147 lbs, so if Rios has to struggle to make even this weight then there’s no excuse for the guy. Rios had to move up in weight from lightweight last year because he could no longer make the 135 lb. limit, but then in his last two fights, Rios has struggled to make the 140 lb. at light welterweight in his two fights with Mike Alvarado.

Mayweather Jr. is an All-Time Great!

may#0111(Photo credit: Casino/Showtime) By Raymond Riggins: I’m a huge boxing fan, and couldn’t help but read the article on this site about Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) not being an all-time great. I mean this is crazy. What does it takes to be an all-time great?

It seems to me in order for him not to become an all-time great he’d have to lose. Mayweather’s 12 round unanimous decision victory over Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-2-1, 18 KO’s) this past Saturday was flawless. He showed he still has his speed, great footwork, excellent defensive skills and is as sharp as a needle.

Mayweather rules out Pacquiao fight

pac6By Chris Williams: If you were hoping to see Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) face the Filipino Manny Pacquiao for his next fight in September then you can forget it; Mayweather says he has absolutely no interest in fighting Pacquiao now because he’s lost his last two fights, and it’s not interesting to him anymore.

Mayweather said to USA Today: “He [Pacquiao] just lost two fights. The fight don’t hold no water no more.”

The way that Mayweather said it he seems to have closed the book on a fight between him and Pacquiao. Mayweather doesn’t want to fight guys that are struggling and/or over-the-hill, and right now it’s not looking good for Pacquiao with him having lost his last two fights.

Warren makes offer for Dereck Chisora vs. Deontay Wilder fight in the summer

chisora22By Scott Gilfoid: British promoter Frank Warren reportedly has made an offer to match his fighter heavyweight Dereck Chisora (16-4, 10 KO’s) against the unbeaten Golden Boy Promotions heavyweight Deontay Wilder (28-0, 28 KO’s) for a fight that would take place in the summer if Golden Boy accepts the offer.

Warren said in his column at frankwarren.com “There isn’t a real name of substance on his [Deontay] CV, he looks crude and open. I’d heavily back a fit and fired up Dereck Chisora to tame him and have already made the Yanks a substantial offer to return here [UK] this summer.”
