Broner with great opportunity to impress on Mayweather undercard

broner5352By Scott Gilfoid: The talented WBO lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) will be looking to build his star power on the Floyd Mayweather Jr. undercard on May 4th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 23-year-old Broner has already been winning many new converts lately with his impressive knockout wins over Jason Litzau, Vincente Martin Rodriguez, Eloy Perez, Vincente Escobedo, and Antonio DeMarco. Broner has knocked out his last five opponents and his last 15 of 16 opponents.

It’s been real impressive stuff from this young Mayweather-esque talent. However, Broner hasn’t been able to reach the huge numbers that he’d like to because his fights have been on regular HBO instead of PPV. Having Broner on the Mayweather card will mean millions of boxing fans will be tuning in to watch this fight due to Mayweather head-lining it, and the fans that don’t see it on PPV will catch it on the replay on regular HBO. This is Broner’s chance to really shine and win over a legion of loyal boxing fans.

Warren interested in matching Burns against Broner or one of the other lightweight champions in 2013

burns43By Scott Gilfoid: Frank Warren, the promoter for WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s), says he wants to match Burns against one of the other lightweight champions in 2013 after Burns gets past his January title defense against one of the challengers. Warren especially is interested in matching Burns against WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner.

Warren said in his column in thesun.co.uk “If WBO lightweight boss Burns comes through a mark-time third defense of his belt in late January as expected, I’d love to pair him with any of the other 135lbs world claimants, but particularly overhyped WBC czar Adrien Broner from Cincinnati.”

Broner: Pacquiao always gets hit with right hands

pac6By Chris Williams: Adrien Broner, the clone of Floyd Mayweather Jr., wasn’t surprised at watching replays of Manny Pacquiao get knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez recently. Broner notes that Pacquiao has never had any defense for a right hand and has spent his career getting hit with those kinds of punches.

Speaking with fighthype.com, Broner said “His name is Plankuiao [Pacquiao]. Plankuiao never got out of the way of a right hand. He always gets hit with a right hand.”

That is true. Pacquiao has always been wide open to those punches, especially in his fights against Marquez. If you watch all four of their fights you’ll notice that Marquez has always been able to sail a right hand through Pacquiao’s open guard to nail him with head and body shots. For some reason Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach hasn’t been able to fix that part of Pacquiao’s game even after all these years with him.

Broner: It’s pointless for Mayweather to fight Pacquiao now

floyd9By Chris Williams: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner, the good friend of unbeaten WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s), thinks whatever interest there was in a fight between Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, it died with Pacquiao’s 6th round knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez on December 8th of this month. Broner now sees it as a pointless fight because Pacquiao’s loss has killed the interest in that fight.

Broner said to Fighthype.com “Plankuiao [Pacquiao] never got out of the way of a right hand. He always gets hit with a right hand. It makes no sense for Floyd to fight him now.”

Broner is right. Getting knocked out the way that Pacquiao was does make it a senseless fight to put together. Even if Pacquiao were winning to take the small money in an 80-20 purse split, it’s still not an interesting fight because Pacquiao is starting to look like a shot fighter and has lost his last two fights. He got beat by Tim Bradley and looked bad in that fight, and then we just saw what Marquez did to him.

Hearn agrees to terms for Broner vs. Rees bout on February 16th in Atlantic City

broner777By Scott Gilfoid: Eddie Hearn, the promoter for contender Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO’s), has reportedly agreed to terms for a fight against WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) on February 16th in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Hearn said on his twitter “Hounded by questions about Rees v Broner. We have agreed to terms with Golden Boy for February 16. Delighted for Gavin, he deserves this massive shot. February is going to be some month on Sky Boxing.”

Golden Boy likely gave Rees/Hearn a huge offer for this fight, likely much bigger than what Rees has been getting. Golden Boy wanted the fight because they couldn’t get the Brit WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns to accept a fight. So they went for the next best thing, which unfortunately is Rees. I say unfortunately because I don’t see him being in the same class as Burns, and Burns would have been an easy fight for Broner as well. Both Rees and Burns are a huge step down from Broner’s last opponent Antonio DeMarco.

Rees: I’m going to beat Broner and become two-time World champion

broner433By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBA World light welterweight and British and EBU lightweight champion Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO’s) has been selected by the promoters for WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) to be his next opponent on February 16th at Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Rees doesn’t seem to realize that he’s pretty much been selected only to get the British public primed for a much, much bigger fight between Broner and WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns in 2013. Rees actually thinks he has a chance in this fight, and boy is he going to be in for a rude awakening when the bell sounds in the 1st round and he starts to take a terrible beating by Broner.

Broner: Burns doesn’t want to fight me; he’s just milking the sport

broner62By Scott Gilfoid: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) is disappointed but not surprised that WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) chose not to fight him on February 16th, as Broner thinks that Burns is just looking to make money from the sport and not fight the best guys.

Broner said to Fighthype.com “He don’t want to fight me…He’s trying to milk the game. He knows after he fights me, he’s not going to be s***.”

Broner-Rees: Adrien needs to move up to 140 after he destroys Gavin

broner53By Scott Gilfoid: Golden Boy Promotions isn’t helping their young star WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) by setting him up with sick mismatches like his scheduled February 16th mismatch against Britain’s Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO’s) at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Fights like this aren’t helping Broner become a bigger star nor is putting him with reluctant fighters like Ricky Burns, who the American boxing public has never heard aside from the hardcore fans.

Broner is going to destroy Rees within few rounds and the fans will get nothing from this fight. Broner needs to move up to 140 where he can at least find some halfway decent talent to compete with. The lightweight division is devoid of any real talent, and it’s a waste of Broner’s career for him to be chasing down fights against guys that don’t want to fight.
