Warren interested in matching Burns against Broner or one of the other lightweight champions in 2013

burns43By Scott Gilfoid: Frank Warren, the promoter for WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s), says he wants to match Burns against one of the other lightweight champions in 2013 after Burns gets past his January title defense against one of the challengers. Warren especially is interested in matching Burns against WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner.

Warren said in his column in thesun.co.uk “If WBO lightweight boss Burns comes through a mark-time third defense of his belt in late January as expected, I’d love to pair him with any of the other 135lbs world claimants, but particularly overhyped WBC czar Adrien Broner from Cincinnati.”

I’d like to believe that but I don’t see it happening. Burns already had his chance to fight Broner twice, and he opted instead to go in another direction. At the end of the day, I think Burns doesn’t want any part of the talented Broner and I don’t blame him. I’ve seen Burns fight plenty of times and I don’t give him a chance of beating IBF champ Miguel Vazquez, Richard Abril, Sharif Bogere and especially Broner, although I could see a scenario where if the fight takes place in the UK, Burns might win a controversial decision in a fight that he’s totally dominated in. But Broner won’t agree to fight Burns in the UK, and even if he did, he’d only knock him out and make spectators of the judges. Vazquez, Abril and Bogere would box circles around Burns and expose him for the limited talent that he has.

I think it’s a waste of time for Broner to even be looking at trying to fight Burns because the guy has already had two chances to fight him, and he instead chose to take another path. Why waste time on trying to fight the guy if he’s not willing to get in the ring with him? It’s pointless. Let Burns continue to fight guys like Kevin Mitchell for the remainder of his career while Broner moves onto greatness.

Broner thinks Burns is just milking his title against weaker opposition rather than taking on the best in the division. Broner has already concluded that Burns doesn’t want to fight him for fear of losing his title and the aura that he has with his loyal boxing fans.
