Canelo Domination Streak Ends, Escapes with Draw Against Golovkin

Image: Canelo Domination Streak Ends, Escapes with Draw Against Golovkin

By Godfrey Falcon: In a dramatic twist, the Mexican sensation, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (49-1-2) escapes with a Split Draw against Kazhakstan great Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (37-0-1) on Mexican Independence Day, September 16, 2017. Setting aside the talent and experience on both ends, Alvarez also had the advantages of fighting on the most important holiday of his home country, the great promise of money from the Mexican fanbase in the potential rematch, and judge Adelaide Byrd giving him the dubious scorecard of 118 to 110. The other two judges had more believable scorecards, albeit perhaps closer than the affair actually appeared. Dave Moretti scored the fight 115 to 113 for Golovkin, and Don Trella had it 114 to 114 even.

No Mas for Walters after Lomachenko dominates – Results

walters100

By Godfrey Falcon: November 2016 has been a great month for boxing, culminating in Nicholas Walters vs. Vasyl Lomachenko last Saturday night at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Nevada. With echoes of the rematch between Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Roberto Duran exactly 36 years ago, Jamaica’s highly esteemed former WBA Featherweight Champion, Nicholas “The Axe Man” Walters (28-1-1) gets comprehensively chopped down by Vasyl “Hi-Tech” Lomachenko (7-1-0) and called it quits. Cleary from the corner, we could hear Walters telling referee Tony Weeks the same words Duran said that fateful day, “No Mas. No Mas.” Officially winning by TKO after the 7th Round, Lomachenko, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and current WBO Jr. Lightweight Champion, effectively vindicates his proponents, and proved his nay-sayers painfully wrong.

Walters, previously an undefeated power-puncher with incredibly long reach, was best known for his destruction of former Fighter of the Year Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire (37-4), a fight that shook up the boxing world. After moving up to Jr. Lightweight and still proving he had the power to make his opponents honest, the bout between he and the Ukrainian native was hyped to be a highly competitive match between the best and the best.

Bradley looks improved under Atlas, not enough against Pacquiao

bradley833By Godfrey Falcon: Timothy Bradley (33-2-1, 13 KOs) entered the ring last Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada for his second fight under trainer Teddy Atlas. After a sensational performance against Brandon Rios in his prior bout last November, two fights against Manny Pacquiao (58-6-2, 38 KOs), and the typical mental steel he enters the ring with, he had every tool necessary at his disposal to defeat the Filipino phenomenon.

Bradley looked good, and he looked smart, jabbing frequently to keep Manny wary of rushing in and taking advantage of Manny’s mistakes. This Tim Bradley did look like the best Tim Bradley that Manny had ever gone up against, worthy of his inclusion in the Top 10 Pound-for-Pound Boxers of today status. But sadly, and even unexpectedly, it was not enough.
