Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn has signed the biggest new talent in the welterweight division, inking IBF champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis to a multi-fight deal.

Hearn Snags the Division’s Best

The signing of the 26-year-old’Boots’ Ennis (31-0, 28 KOs) gives Hearn the #1 fighter in the 147-lb division now that Terence Crawford is moving up to 154.

This signing gives Hearn the best fighter in the welterweight division by far, and a guy that is young enough to be on top for many years to come.

Ennis Ready to Shine

Hearn has the cache and the ambition to keep Boots Ennis active, and turn him into a superstar, which his promoters have failed to do. Ennis hasn’t fought since last July when he stopped Roiman Villa in the tenth round. Ideally, he should have already fought twice since then to keep the momentum going with his career.

Ennis will be making his debut with Matchroom this summer, defending his IBF title against a still to be determined opponent.

“Wow – What a signing!” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “I’ve watched this young man for many years, and I always believed he would become a pound-for-pound great, and I have no doubt he is already the greatest fighter in the division. To win the race to sign Jaron is a massive coup for Matchroom Boxing and DAZN.”

The way that Hearn has been smiling recently when mentioning the welterweight division indicates that he knew that he had bagged Ennis for his Matchroom company and was happy knowing that he’s got the biggest young star in the game.

Hearn Has His Star

This is definitely a good thing for Hearn because his top money-maker for Matchroom, former two-time heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is getting up there in age at 34, and he likely doesn’t have a lot more time left before he retires.

Once AJ is gone, Hearn needs someone to step into his shoes to be the next breadwinner for Matchroom, and Ennis could be the guy. It’s certainly not Conor Benn. Speaking of Benn. He posted a photo of him and Boots Ennis standing in the ring, which could mean that he’ll be his opponent this summer.
