Trainer Andre Rozier is siding with Terence Crawford if he and Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis ever fight in the future. Rozier likes the knockouts that Crawford scores, and points out that he’s stopped everyone he’s faced since moving up to 147 in 2018.
The Madrimov Threat and Future Timeline
Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs) and Boots Ennis (31-0, 28 KOs) could fight sooner or later depending on when His Excellency Turki Alalshikh wants the match to happen. It may not happen at all if Crawford’s career is ended by WBA junior middleweight champion Israil Madrimov.
If Crawford loses badly by knockout or a beat down by Madrimov, he reacts to the loss in a couple of ways.
Either retire or take a rematch and possibly get beaten again. Crawford is turning 37 soon and has thrown away another year by sitting on the sidelines, and that’s not good for a fighter going up to 154 to fight the biggest puncher in the division.
Boots’ new promoter, Eddie Hearn, wants him to unify the welterweight title before facing Crawford, which means we might not see the two fight for a year or two. By then, Crawford might be 38, and he could have lost something from his game.
We don’t know what Crawford has left because he’s been out of the ring celebrating his victory over Errol Spence. Fighting just once a year for the last four years can’t be a good thing for Crawford if he meets up with Boots Ennis.
Rozier’s Stance on Ennis
“He’s not fighting, he can’t progress. He’s a world champion, but nobody to dance with. So, I think at least with Eddie [Hearn], he’ll get that work he needs,” said trainer Andre Rozier to Fighthype about IBF welterweight champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis signing with Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn, who hopefully will keep him busy.
Boots Ennis could be fighting in July against Cody Crowley if the fight gets made. Assuming it does, we’ll see what Hearn has next for Boots. He wants to match him against the other welterweight champions Mario Barrios and Eimantas Stanionis.
“Without a doubt,” said Rozier when asked if Boots Ennis is the best fighter at 147 now. “I got Terence [Crawford] at 154 now. Boots is the only one I can see, but I’m with TC all the way. I’m with Terence Crawford all the way,” said Rozier when asked if Boots Ennis is the only one that can potentially beat Crawford.
If the fight is delayed too long, Crawford might be too old to beat Boots, and he could be exposed if Madrimov doesn’t end his career first on August 3rd. Rozier is assuming that Crawford has stopped aging his fight with Spence and will be in the same physical form when he fights again, but that’s not realistic.
When you’re aging and inactive, you don’t stay the same. Crawford might be a different fighter when he gets in with Boots Ennis and Madrimov.
“He’s a phenomenal athlete. He does what he has to do. He wins by knockout. Every fight he’s had 147 has been a KO. I love that part. I’m a knockout guy. I like to see knockouts, and he provides them. So, I’m TC all the way,” said Rozier.
