By Robert Segal: Veteran Erickson ‘The Hammer’ Lubin vows to utilize his experience to defeat the unbeaten junior middleweight phenom Jesus Ramos in their twelve round co-feature fight on the Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermell Charlo card on September 30th on Showtime PPV at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The 27-year-old ten-year professional Lubin (25-2, 18 KOs) needs to take risks with his career to quickly get a title shot following his ninth round sstoppagee loss to 6’5 1/2″ Sebastian ‘The Towering Inferno’ Fundora last year in April.
Facing the hard-hitting 22-year-old Ramos (20-0, 16 KOs) is the ideal way for Lubin to get a title shot, and he feels he can do the thing Jermell Charlo did to him six years ago when he stopped him in the fit round in 2017.
Lubin was just 22 then, facing the 27-year-old Charlo, and he wasn’t ready for that kind of high-level fighter in his 19th pro fight.
Now, the tables are reversed, with Lubin, 27, facing the 22-year-old Ramos in a twelve round contest in an event that will have many boxing fans tuning in, watching the action.
It’s an ideal situation for Lubin to put himself in a position to get a rematch with Charlo, who is expected to return to the 154-lb division to defend his titles.
Is it too early for Jesus Ramos?
“I feel like the tables are turned now. [Jermell] Charlo was 27-years-old when I fought him, and I was 22. Now, I’m 27-years-old, and he’s [Jesus Ramos] 22. I’m looking to show him that he’s taking a step up a little too early,” said Erickson ‘The Hammer’ Lubin to Fighthype about his co-feature bout against the highly ranked junior middleweight contender Jesus Ramos on September 30th on Showtime PPV.
Is it too early for Ramos, or will he be too much for Lubin like we saw with Fundora? Lubin is going to have to be ready to start brawling right away because Ramos is going to be on top of him from the opening bell, looking to score a fast knockout as he did in his last fight against Joey Spencer.
“Definitely not,” said Lubin when asked if Raamos is at the same level now that Jermell was when he fought him in 2017 and was knocked out in the first round. “Jermell was experienced. He was 30-0 when I fought him.
“He’s experienced, he packs a punch, and he has a good IQ. You underestimate that a lot with Jermell. He has a good IQ, a real good IQ, but I don’t think Ramos has that IQ yet. I think that’s going to be a little advantage for myself.”
Ramos looks better now than Jermell Charlo was back in 2017. Jermell was pretty flawed six years ago, as we saw in his fights with Gabriel Rosado & Vanes Martirosyan.
He struggled against both of those fighters, and those are guys that Jesus Ramos would destroy if this version of him were fighting back in 2017.
“His IQ isn’t there. He’s tough, he’s strong, he’s powerful, he comes to fight, but in that boxing ring. Every round, you’ve got to be thinking every second,” said Lubin.
Erickson to make Ramos miss shots
“Just making him miss shots, hitting him with shots, hitting him and hitting him,” said Erickson when asked how he could test Ramos’ IQ. “He shows up every time. He showed up against Joey Spencer and showed up against everyone they put in front of him.
“He’s pretty much wiped out all the guys that he’s fought, but I feel like that’s the best available opponent they have for me right now. I wanted the [Sebastian] Fundora rematch. Fundora just lost to Brian Mendoza. It’s not as much right now.”
Ramos doesn’t stop punching, so even if Lubin makes him miss with a shott, you can count on him continuing to land. The only way Lubin wins this fight is by out-brawling the younger Ramos, which won’t be easy.
“I want to see how Fundora responds and comes back before we even talk about a rematch,” said Lubin. “I wanted the Brian Mendoza fight, but it’s looking like he’s fighting Tim Tszyu now. So Ramos was next in line. I said, ‘Hell, yeah, let’s do it. Let’s make it happen.’
“Yeah, and I’m young. I’m 27 years old and in my prime right now. I’m a young vet,” said Lubin.
