BoMac on Crawford vs. Spence rematch: “The same thing is going to happen”

By Chris Williams: Terence Crawford’s trainer Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntyre predicts that he’s going to beat Errol Spence Jr. in the rematch at 154 in the same way he did in their first fight on July 29th.

BoMac feels that Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs) is the superior fighter, and he’ll do the job against the former unified welterweight champion Spence (28-1, 22 KOs).

We still don’t know if Spence, 33, execute his rematch, but it’s believed he has until next month to decide if he’s going to take the immediate fight with Crawford.

But even if Spence doesn’t, the two will still likely face later on because there’s too much money that would be on the line for them not to meet in a rematch.

Most boxing fans would agree that it would be wise for Spence to take two or three tune-up fights before he faces Crawford again.

Ideally, that would be two or three fights in one year, not one fight a year like Spence has been doing.

That kind of inactivity won’t help Spence. Errol’s inactivity since 2019 has hurt his career, causing him to balloon up in weight.

If Crawford goes ahead with his plans to fight the Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermell Charlo winner, there’s a good chance he loses that fight.

At that point, it might not be worth it for Spence to fight Crawford again because he would be seen as damaged goods. Crawford is cashing out and might retire if he gets aa big payday against Canelo or Jermell.

Will Spence improve in rematch?

“I believe Terence can be better depending on what he’s got in front of him. As far as Spence, he’s been better. In this fight, he weighed in just the same as Terence did. He had to do the same thing that Terence did,”  said Brian ‘BoMac’  McIntyre to Ring IQ TV, giving his thoughts on the Errol Spence Jr. vs. Terence Crawford fight.

“If the rematch do happen, we’re going to do the same thing. We’re going to prepare the same way. We’re not going to cut no corners, and we’re not going to take him lightly,” said BoMac about Spence.

Will Crawford do the same thing to Spence in the rematch if Errol’s not weight-drained from coming down from 190 lbs? If Spence comes into training camp in good shape, the rematch could have a different outcome, especially if the fight takes place at 160 or 168, which is where Errol should be.

“That extra weight sometimes do matter,” Brian said about the Crawford vs. Spence rematch likely to occur at 154. “We can use it to an advantage for us and beat him, but me personally, I just know the fight is going to go the same way.

“I never seen him get beat that bad. I’m not Errol Spence, and I’m not his trainer. I don’t know how much it took out of him. So, we’ll have to see going into his next fight if he’s gunshy, or do we really want to do this? We’ll have to see,” said BoMac.

Crawford not receiving credit

You have to put Bud in the category of the all time greats. He accomplished something in boxing that nobody did in years, especially in this era and the last couple of eras,” said BoMac.

It’s difficult to put Crawford in with the all time greats because even with his victory over the drained-looking Spence, his 15-year resume is as barren as Jupiter’s moon, Ganymede.

Crawford’s best wins:

  • Errol Spence Jr
  • Shawn Porter –
  • David Avanesyan
  • Jeff Horn
  • Ricky Burns
  • Jose Benavidez Jr
  • Yuriorkis Gamboa
  • Viktor Postol

Crawford’s resume isn’t quite good enough for him to be among the all-time greats. You have to do better than that to be among the best of all time unless we lower the bar to what it takes to be one of the best.

“I know that there are some fighters out there that have been undisputed, but it’s been years,” said BoMac. “So if I’m talking about boxing and the all-time greats came up, Terence Crawford is going to be one of the ones I mention. That will be in the conversation.

“He’s got all the belts. People try to undercut and undermine his greatness and what he accomplished, but regardless of what you say, he’s still the undisputed world champion.

“He beat the man that took all those belts from everybody else. So you can’t downgrade him or dismantle his accomplishments,” said BoMac.

Instead of BoMac being so hyper-sensitive about Crawford’s resume, he should be helping him out by agreeing with the critics who are pointing out the obvious about his undisputed championships from 140 & 147.

Terence became the undisputed champion at 140 by being Julius Indongo, a fighter that Regis Prograis knocked out with a jab in the second round in 2018.

Crawford-Spence 2: Same outcome

“Is that the best version I’ve seen of him? I don’t know. We’ll see what he’s going to look in his next fight,” said BoMac about Spence. “If he do rematch Terence, the same thing is probably going to happen.”

If Spence is just as drained & weak in the rematch with Crawford at 154, you have to assume one of three things about Errol:

1. Not keeping his weight under control between fights.

2. Needs to move up to 160 or 168

3. Washed up & needs to retire

“I would say it is. Again, he had to weigh-in the same weight as Bud. He knew about the fight months before. So if he was weight drained, that’s just bad coaching on Derrick James’  part,” said BoMac when told that Spence’s trainer Derrick said that Errol was weight drained for the fight.

“We all had the right amount of time to prepare for this fight. So I’m not looking for not excuses, but Errol didn’t have no excuses. Everybody else did,” said BoMac.

Obviously, BoMac doesn’t want to entertain any plausible reasons why Spence looked so weak for the fight because that would take away credit from Crawford for the biggest victory of his 15-year pro career.

But if BoMac had done his homework and seen Spence’s past fights, he’d known that he looked like he was fighting at 50% capacity and was drained as a fighter can be
