John Ryder wants Golovkin, Munguia or Benavidez for next fight

By Sean Jones: John Ryder has put together his wishlist for his next fight, with superstar Gennadiy Golovkin at the top. GGG looked very powerful in his last fight against Canelo Alvarez last September, which he would have won if not for a slow start in the contest’s first half.

Ryder (32-6, 18 KOs) feels that the performance he put in with his recent losing effort against Canelo Alvarez last May was good enough for him to rate another big fight, this time against former IBF, WBA & WBC middleweight champion Golovkin (42-2-1, 37 KOs).

The 34-year-old Ryder is willing to travel to Kazakhstan to fight Golovkin to make it happen, although it doesn’t make much sense to stage the contest over there, as GGG lives in Los Angeles, California, and it would seem like the obvious place to stage the contest would be there for money purposes.

Golovkin would be dangerous for Ryder, particularly since the British fighter likes to stand before his opponents, trying to crowd them.

Ryder’s wish list for the next fight:

1. Gennadiy Golovkin
2. Jaime Munguia
3. David Benavidez

I’d love to; I’ve proved I’ll go anywhere. I’ve gone in there and fought Canelo, who I’m a massive fan of, and Golovkin’s no different,” said Ryder to ProBox TV about Golovkin.

“I’ve been a massive fan of him since I first turned pro. He’s been a great champion.”

If the 41-year-old Golovkin is going to fight again, and that’s a big IF, facing Ryder, with him coming off a loss, would be a waste of time. Golovkin can make more money fighting Jaime Munguia or David Benavidez than facing the recently beaten Ryder.

Golovkin, with his power, will likely destroy the easy-to-hit Ryder and finish what the faded Canelo Alvarez started last May in Guadalajara.

It’s fair to say that if Canelo could throw combinations and if his stamina were better, he would have likely knocked Ryder out in the fifth round when he dropped him hard.

The only thing that Canelo would have needed to finish Ryder in that round was a sustained flurry of shots, and he would have folded. Unfortunately, Canelo’s cardio is too poor to throw more than two or three punches without taking a long rest break against the ropes.

“That’s definitely a fight I’d be open to. Berlanga, I think he needs to take care of business Saturday,” said Ryder about super middleweight Edgar Berlanga’s fight against Jason Quigley this Saturday, June 24th at Madison Square Garden in New York.

“I think he’s past his best, but I still think he’s very good,” said Ryder about Canelo Alvarez starting to show signs of age.
