On May 4th at the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada, IBF, WBA, WBC, and WBO Super Middleweight Champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, 60-2-2 with 39 stoppages from Guadalajara, Mexico, defends against WBC Silver Super Middleweight Champion Jaime Munguia, 43-0 with 34 stoppages, from Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico.
Munguia is coming off a ninth-round stoppage of former WBO Interim Super Middleweight Champion John ‘The Gorilla’ Ryder, 32-6, of Islington, London, UK, at Footprint Center Phoenix, Arizona, in January of 2024.
In May of 2023, Alvarez had decisioned Ryder over 12 rounds.
With a win over Alvarez, Munguia would be chasing former world champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather, Jr. and his 50-0 record.
Mayweather equaled former heavyweight champion Rocky “The Brockton Blockbuster” Marciano’s 49-0 record, who retired in September of 1955, by defeating former WBC and IBF Welterweight champion Andre Berto, 30-3, in September of 20-15. Berto had gone 3-3 in his previous six bouts.
In August of 2017, Mayweather broke Marciano’s 62-year-old record, improving to 50-0, by stopping former UFC champion Conor McGregor, making his boxing debut in ten rounds.
While many boxers chased Marciano’s record, there are only three unbeaten boxers with at least 40 wins and at least 30 wins.
WBA Super World, WBC, and WBO Welterweight champion Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford is 40-0 with 31 stoppages from Omaha, Nebraska.
Crawford relinquished his IBF title, which was won by Jaron “Boots” Ennis, 31-0, with 28 stoppages from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The only other boxer with at least 40 wins is WBA Fedebol Lightweight champion Abel ‘El Zorro’ Mendoza, 40-0 and 30 stoppages from El Paso, Texas.
Mendoza’s last six fights have been five times in Colombia, South America, his last in January of 2024, and one in Jamaica in November 2023.
Others with at least 30 unbeaten wins besides Ennis are former WBO World Middleweight champion Jermall ‘Hit Man’ Charlo, 33-0, with 22 stoppages, who last fought in November of 2023, defeating Jose Benavidez, Jr., 28-2-1, at the Michelob Ultra Arena, weighing 166 ½, pounds.
His brother, the former unified Super Welterweight champion Jermell “Iron Man” Charlo, 35-2-1, was defeated by Alvarez in September of 2023.
Others unbeaten with at least 30 wins are WBC World Super Lightweight champion Devin “The Dream” Haney, 31-0 with 15 stoppages and scheduled to fight this Saturday, defending against Ryan “King Ry” Garcia, 24-1 with 20 stoppages at Barclay’s Center, Brooklyn, New York.
WBA Continental Americas Lightweight champion William “Camaron” Zepeda, 30-0 with 26 stoppages from San Mateo Atenco, Mexico, is the other unbeaten boxer with at least 30 wins.
Mayweather has held the 50-0 record for some seven years and with boxers today fighting one or two times a year the record should stand for sometime but may not be as long as Marciano’s 62 years.
