Canelo vs. Munguia: That’ll Be $89.99, Please (Time to Sell Some Plasma?)

By Sean Jones - 04/17/2024 - Comments

Canelo Alvarez vs. Jaime Munguia will lighten your wallet by a cool $89.99 for fans interested in watching their fight on May 4th on Amazon Prime Video and DAZN PPV. The price is out of this world high for a fight that no one has been asking for. Fans might need to sell plasma at a donation center to come up with the dough to watch this mismatch.

Fans Revolt: “My Firestick is Ready to Rumble”

Fans are already complaining about the cost, saying they’ll watch it for free with their firesticks, which isn’t good for the fighters, promoters, and network broadcasters. The firesticks are going to see some action on May 4th. Fans are going to take a hard pass at paying the $89.99 for this event. That’s just way too high.

I think it’s fair to say that if the organizers don’t drop the price to a more reasonable $70, there will be a lot of people watching it for free, either with their Firesticks or waiting on the uploads on YouTube, after it’s immediately posted many times on the night of the fight.

$89.99? Are They Kidding?

At $89.99, the success of this event will fall on the ultra-hardcore boxing fans who are loyal supporters of Mexican star Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs). You have to be a REAL Canelo fan to want to pay that sky-high price and go into hock, having to pawn the family jewels.

It’s too expensive to attract casuals, who are only mildly interested in Canelo and are not fans of Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs).

Munguia’s Opponents: Seniors Tour, Boxing Edition

The problem with Munguia is he’s never fought anyone good during his 11-year professional career, and his resume is 100% inflated with scrubs. It’s a crime how Munguia has never fought one good opponent, and he’s getting blessed by Canelo with life-changing loot.

Munguia’s opponents look like they’ve come out of a senior center.

– John Ryder: 35
– Sergiy Derevyanchenko: 38
– Gabriel Rosado: 38
– Tureano Johnson: 40
– Gary O’Sullivan: 39
– Dennis Hogan: 39
– Liam Smith: 35

Fans would be willing to pay that much money if undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo were fighting David Benavidez because that’s a match that people have been asking for, but not Munguia.

Price Drop or Piracy Extravaganza

I think it would be a good idea for the promoters to drop the price to $70, and maybe, just maybe, they can make some decent cash on this mismatch. If not, it will be Firestick City, and fans will be waiting on YouTube uploads on the fight night.
