Canelo’s “Surprise” Amid Benavidez Speculation: Is the Fight Finally Happening?

Canelo Alvarez says he has a “big surprise” for his Mexican fans on May 4th when he defends his undisputed super middleweight championship against Jaime Munguia.

The way Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) smiled, looking like Cheshire Cat from Alice and Wonderland, some believe that he could have a big announcement, potentially about his long-awaited mega-fight against David Benavidez in September.

Benavidez’s Weight Struggle: A Factor for Canelo?

One can only hope that’s the case because the Mexican superstar Canelo has got many people down on him, viewing him as afraid of Benavidez, who may not be as good as some fans think.

Canelo might as well get it over with before Benavidez can no longer drain down from 200+ lbs to make 168. In his recent training video, he resembled an out of shape cruiserweight, with saddlebags around his waist and an Elvis Presley-esque paunch. What on earth has Benavidez been eating to put that much fat on his frame?

If Canelo waits too long before fighting Benavidez, he’ll be giving the ‘Mexican Monster’ an excuse to give fans if he loses, blaming it on being weight drained, which would a good reason. He’s looked on death’s door making weight for his last two fights against Demetrius Andrade and Caleb Plant.

You can tell from Benavidez’s gaunt, dealth-like appearance that it’s taking every bit for him to continue to make the 168-lb division, as he’s clearly outgrown the division at 27 and needs to be in a weight class that is more suited to his large 6’2″ frame, like cruiserweight or bridgerweight.

Canelo’s Focus on Munguia… For Now

“That makes me excited [Munguia’s unbeaten record] because I want to show everybody what I am at this point,” said Canelo Alvarez to TMZ Sport about his title defense against Jaime Munguia on May 4th.

“I feel very motivated, I feel excited and I can’t wait. I get in there and try and knockout my opponent, and this is not going to be an exception. I’m going to step in the ring to with the mentality to try and finish the fight before the 12 rounds,” said Canelo when asked if he’s going to be attempting to knockout Munguia.

Something Special for the Fans

“Yes, I always try to bring something to the people and the Mexicans,” said Canelo on whether he has something planned for the fans in terms of entertiamemt.

“You know with the fight, two Mexicans vs. Mexicans, I think it’s enough, but I got something else for the Mexicans. No, it’s a surprise. I like to surprise people,” said Canelo.

Could the surprise that Canelo has be an announcement for a fight against Benavidez in September? If so, he would undercutting the Saudis wanting Benavidez to face the winner of the June 1st undisputed light heavyweight championship fight between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol, but perhaps Alvarez has been negotiating behind the scenes.

The only thing that makes this writer doubt that is Benavidez still looking dour in his interviews, like he had a mouth full of lemons.
