Joe Goosen on Ryan Garcia: “He’s got the aura of a winner”

By Brian Webber: Ryan Garcia’s trainer Joe Goosen says he’s in “awe” of him after his strong camp in preparation for his fight against Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis this Saturday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Goosen admits that he’s been in boxing for 53 years and feels that Ryan (23-0, 19 KOs) has an element to his game that he’s not seen.

It’s understandable why Goosen is slathering praise on Ryan from head to toe because that’s what trainers typically do.

In that respect, they sound much like promoters but look at it this way. If Ryan wins, Goosen wins because he’d be at the top of the sport, and Joe would be along for the ride.

“Ryan has got an aura around him right now. He’s got the aura of a winner, a star, and a guy on a mission. I rate it in the top five of all camps,” said trainer Joe Goosen about Ryan Garcia at yesterday’s grand arrival in Las Vegas for Saturday’s fight with Gervonta Davis.

“I’m in awe of Ryan Garcia, to tell you the truth. He’s a very special fighter. They don’t come along very often.

He’s really been destroying a lot of sparring partners along the way,” said Goosen.

It would be interesting to know who Ryan has been destroying in camp. If it’s, some nobody pulled off the street; you got to take Goosen’s praise of him with a grain of salt.

He thinks he’s got the ingredients that will lead to victory over the undefeated Davis (28-0, 26 KOs) when they battle in their 136-lb catchweight fight on PPV at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Tank is the favorite, but it’s a 50-50 fight because he’d been carefully matched by his former management at Mayweather Promotions, who kept him away from the elite-level opposition at 130, 135, and 140.

All we know is Tank is good enough to beat the B-players, but he’s still an unproven commodity when fighting A-players or the elite.

If Ryan wins on Saturday night in a blowout, you can chalk that up for a sign that Tank Davis was never as good as people were led to believe.

It’s pretty obvious that Mayweather Promotions never showed interest in matching Tank against the likes of Vasily Lomachenko when he was still in his prime, and they’ve not shown a desire to match him against Shakur Stevenson and Devin Haney.

The fight with Ryan Garcia only happens because Golden Boy caved in with the weight stipulations. Otherwise, this match wouldn’t have happened either.
