Ryan Garcia is confident he’ll make weight this Friday for his fight against Devin Haney. He’s predicting a knockout that will leave the WBC 140-lb champion face-first on the canvas.
A face-first knockout by Ryan, 25, of Haney would be the ideal way for the young Victorville, California star to win. Few fans believe he will. In Haney’s last two fights, he’s become difficult to hit and goes out of his way to avoid taking shots.
The downside of Haney’s emphasis on defense is that his fights are unwatchable and completely dull. He wasn’t booed in his last fight against Regis Prograis, but it was boring to watch Devin pulling back all night instead of staying in the pocket.
Ryan will have to be more aggressive than he has been in the past to get to Haney and land a shot that sends him down face-first.
The sparring clip Ryan leaked recently of him pursuing his retreating opponents indicates that he’s been working on going after Haney if he backs up on him.
Weight Won’t Be An Issue
“How am I going to miss weight?! I am just on a mission and ready to destroy him. If Devin doesn’t land face first, then I did something wrong,” said Ryan Garcia to DAZN, ensuring that he’ll make weight for his fight against Devin Haney on Saturday.
With two days to go before the fight, Ryan (24-1, 20 KOs) looks bigger than he usually does before his matches, and he’s not showing the same drained appearance that we’re currently seeing with Haney (31-0, 15 KOs).
If Ryan does come in heavy, he won’t get the chance to fight for Haney’s WBC light welterweight title. That’s less important than Ryan winning the match. The belt might as well be a trinket.
It’s unclear whether there would be any weight penalty that Ryan would have to pay, but that won’t be a big deal given how much money he’s getting paid for Saturday’s mega-fight with Haney.
A victory for Ryan is more important than him capturing Haney’s WBC belt. Of course, Haney will use Ryan coming in overweight as an excuse for losing to him, but fans won’t pay attention to that.
They’ll be focused on Ryan pulling off the upset, and they won’t care that he came in a bit overweight.
