Will Floyd Mayweather Jr ever attempt a comeback?

Floyd MayweatherBy Gerado Granados: A friend of mine asked if future hall of fame member Floyd Mayweather Jr would ever attempt a comeback just as he did before. I told him that in the past Money never retired that he was only on a vacation that might have allowed him to become a free agent.

Then he said that Floyd retired to avoid Gennady “GGG” Golovkin so I gave him that look of a mix of awe and frustration and gently told him to please stop his nonsense. If the reader thinks that Floyd avoided GGG then you could also believe that Sergey Kovalev is avoiding Wladimir Klitschko or that Roman Gonzalez is avoiding Guillermo Rigondeaux.

Many boxing greats have come back from retirement and I bet most of them did it because they needed money or the pay was simply too good to refuse it.

Larry Holmes came back to fight Iron Mike Tyson, he had been retired two years when Tyson needed legitimacy by beating the former dominant heavyweight lion king. Larry made a second comeback and went the distance against Evander Holyfield and defeated Ray Mercer when he was way past his physical prime.

Ray Leonard came back a couple of times with success but in his last against Terry Norris it was evident he was done.

Sugar Ray Robinson came back after a couple years of absence but he no longer was the dominant fighter he once was.

George Foreman came back going to the distance against Evander Holyfield and finally regained the heavyweight crown against Michael Moore.

If Floyd ever attempts a comeback it would be for a good reason, money shouldn’t be an issue for him. Days ago talking to a friend I recalled that Warren Buffett was on his gym previous his fight against Manny Pacquiao. So I can’t see Mayweather having financial struggles.
The only good reason for him that I can think about to attempt a comeback is as he says: if it makes money it makes sense. But it would have to be at least a 100 million notes purse guaranteed for him.

With the announcement of his retirement the 147 and 154 belts should already have been vacated but shamefully still are kept hostage by the WBC – WBA so it brings suspicion about why the governing bodies refuse to apply their own rules and allow the two higher ranked contenders to dispute them. Maybe I have a suspicious mind but to me it looks like they are waiting for the highest bidder before making an official announcement.

Rumors about a tournament have come up lately but the deserving contenders who have put the hard work and sacrifice should get the shot. If Erislandy Lara is the WBA 154 “regular” titlist then he should be promoted or simply be declared the organization champion. To me if the “interim” WBC champion and the highest ranked contender is available then they should get the shot.

By the way the governing bodies act, it looks like there is no need for Floyd to attempt a comeback because he still controls the destiny of two organization weight division belts and the future of many deserving fighters who waste their time waiting for a shot at glory.
I don’t believe Floyd will ever attempt a comeback; but what about the reader, will he?
