Mayweather is fighting like a 25-year-old, says Garcia

Floyd Mayweather Work Out for the PressBy Tim Fletcher: Floyd Mayweather Jr. says he won’t be fighting any longer after his win over Andre Berto on September 12th. The 38-year-old Mayweather says he has nothing else to accomplish in the sport after beating Manny Pacquiao, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Miguel Cotto.

Mayweather could be making a mistake through in ending his career right now rather than extending it for another three years. That’s what Robert Garcia believes. He thinks that Mayweather is still in his prime and can easily fight for three more years to make another $200 million or $300 million.

Garcia feels that Mayweather should continue his career because he’s not taking punishment in his fights, and he’s still winning quite easily. If nothing else, Garcia thinks Mayweather could make really good money if all he wants to do is fight guys in the same class as Andre Berto. But Mayweather could obviously make a lot more money if he were interested in fighting the big names at 147 and face IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.

“Continue fighting the Andre Berto’s for another three years,” Garcia said to Fighthype about Mayweather. “He could easy and make $30 million each fight. There’s a lot of big names that he hasn’t fought. If I was him or his adviser, I wouldn’t retire. Why would I retire if I would make another $200 million in two or three years; maybe even more? Why would he retire? He’s 38 and still in his prime,” Garcia said.

Garcia is right. Mayweather doesn’t take punishment like his father Floyd Mayweather Sr. took in his pro career, or his uncle Roger Mayweather. Those fighters were hit a lot in their careers, because they didn’t have the quick reflexes and blazing hand speed that Mayweather possesses. Neither of those fighters were known for their hand speed. Mayweather must have got his hand speed from his mother’s side of his family.

With the kind of money that Mayweather can make for each fight, he could certainly last another three more years in the sport. I believe that Mayweather could last more than 3 years, even if he’s facing the top fighters like Keith Thurman, Amir Khan, Danny Garcia, Shawn Porter, Golovkin, and Errol Spence.

Mayweather is aging more like Bernard Hopkins than someone like Oscar De La Hoya, who was a completely shot fighter by the time he was 34.

“He’s fighting like a 25-year-old,” Garcia said. So why wouldn’t he be able to do it for another 3 years? There’s no reason why he can’t do it for another three or four years. In two more years he could still pick up another $200 million. Why couldn’t he? I would. He doesn’t get hurt. He didn’t get knocked out twice. So why not? I’d be very surprised if he did retire,” Garcia added.

It’s hard to imagine Mayweather walking away and passing up all the money he can make in the sport. That’s money that won’t be there when he retires permanently and is wishing that he’d kept fighting so that he could have made as much money as possible.
