Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: Who will fall in May?

floyd7By Dominic Panaia: What I find amazing is the misconception about opponents faced and the blatant disregard for facts about Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr having lost their power. We seem to make the assumption about Pacquiao and his lack of apparent power since 2009. However, if we check the facts, we see that Pacquiao’s opponents have had excellent chins during that time frame.

So it’s not easy to just assume Pacquiao has lost his power. Likewise we see Floyd Mayweather Jr has the same problem. Paquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach has said on many occasions we are not afraid of Mayweather’s power, and so has Amir Khan and even Keith Thurman. They say his power won’t hurt us so why not get it on what’s the worst that can happen.

Is this blind of these men to believe that Pacquiao and Mayweather have lost their power? There is a reason why so many big hitters don’t land a lot of shots against Mayweather; so his power has to great enough to command respect when coming in.

Let’s take a look at who Mayweather and Pacquiao have faced in their last 10 fights and assess if there is anything to this argument. The following is a list of fighter these men have faced and their Knockout record at the time of fighting them.

YouTube video

FLOYD MAYWEATHER

1. Oscar De La Hoya – 30 knockouts been knocked out once by Middleweight Bernard Hopkins Mayweather fought Oscar at Junior Middleweight above Mayweather’s weight class.
2. Ricky Hatton – 31 knockouts undefeated never knocked out.
3. Juan Marquez – 40 Knockouts never been knocked out.
4. Shane Mosley – 39 knockouts never been knocked out.
5. Victor Ortiz – 22 knockouts been knocked out once by Marcos Maidana.
6. Miguel Cotto – 30 knockouts knocked out twice by Pacquiao & Margarito Mayweather fought Cotto at Junior Middleweight above Mayweather’s weight class.
7. Robert Guerrero – 18 knockouts never been knocked out.
8. Saul Alvarez – 30 knockouts never been knocked out Mayweather fought Alvarez at Junior Middleweight above Mayweather’s weight class with a catch weight of 152lbs.
9. Marcos Maidana – 31 knockouts never been knocked out.
10. Marcos Maidana – 31 knockouts never been knocked out.

So as you can see, Mayweather has fought some real granite chins in his last 10 fights guys bigger than him and guys that not only have great KO power themselves but guys that don’t get stopped easily.

MANNY PACQUIAO

1. Miguel Cotto – 28 knockouts been knocked out once by Margarito this fight was at a catch weight of 145lbs.
2. Joshua Clottey – 21 knockouts never been knocked out.
3. Antonio Margarito – 27 knockouts knocked out once by Shane Mosley this fight was at Junior Middleweight at a catch weight of 150lbs.
4. Shane Mosley – 39 knockouts never been knocked out.
5. Juan Marquez – 39 knockouts never been knocked out.
6. Timothy Bradley – 12 knockouts never been knocked out Manny Pacquiao lost this fight by decision.
7. Juan Marquez – 40 knockouts never been knocked out Marquez knocked Manny out in this fight.
8. Brandon Rios – 22 knockouts never knocked out.
9. Timothy Bradley – 12 knockouts never knocked out.
10. Chris Algieri – 8 knockouts never been knocked out.

With Pacquiao, he has faced some granite chins in his previous fights and it’s no easy feat to knockout a granite chin. What we have here is a clear case of false information about Pacquiao’s lack of power, and it is quite easy to see why team Mayweather are expecting a knockout win. I mean they are facing a guy that has been knocked out 3 times in his career and is not a natural welterweight.

The part that is troubling is Roach is expecting to knockout Mayweather a man that has never been Knocked out or officially even knocked down in 47 Fights, it is clear from past fights and stats in who they have fought that Floyd Mayweather cannot be judged on his punching power when facing some real granite chins in the last 10 fights.

Is Pacquiao underestimating Mayweather’s power and expecting that he can just walk through the offense of Mayweather in order to get his punches through? Or is Mayweather placing too much trust in his own granite chin and superb defense thinking that not only can Manny not get though his reach but if he does Manny’s power isn’t hard enough to hurt him? It is something we will only know come May 2nd.
