Khan: I’m not going to fight Kell Brook because he’s disrespectful

khan777776By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) has a new excuse for why he doesn’t plan on fighting IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (33-0, 22 KOs). Khan is now saying he doesn’t want to fight Brook because he’s been disrespectful to him.

In other words, Khan is pulling out the same excuse that Ricky Hatton used many years ago to not face Junior Witter. It’s not a great excuse, but it’s different from the ones that Khan used in the past. Khan used to say that he didn’t want to fight Brook because he didn’t have enough experience for him to fight him.

Now that Brook has captured the IBF 147 pound title after beating Shawn Porter, Khan can’t use that excuse anymore. Khan has recently used the excuse that he’s waiting for a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr for why he can’t fight Brook. However, with Mayweather now saying that he has no interest in fighting Khan due to his name not holding any weight in the United States among casual boxing fans, Khan can no longer use that excuse.

“He’s [Brook] not at my level. To be honest with you, I won’t even fight him because he’s disrespectful,” Khan said to Fighthype. “If he was cool and was being respectful then I would, but I’m not going to bother fighting him. I’ve proven myself how good I am and where I’m at, so I’m not going to fight him.”

I personally think this is a rather lame reason for Khan not wanting to fight Brook. I mean, is Brook supposed to smother Khan’s backside with kisses in order to get a fight with him or what? I thought the idea was that it was the norm for fighters to trash talk each other in order to get a fight with them, especially when they’re being ignored like Brook has been by Khan.

If Brook was talking up Khan as being the best thing since sliced bread, it would make it next to impossible for him to get a fight against him because then he’d be like a friend to Khan instead of an adversary.

I had a feeling that Khan wasn’t going to choose to fight Brook. I think Khan wants no part of Brook because he’s got punching power unlike Khan’s last four opponents. You look at the guys that Khan has been matched up against recently – Carlos Molina, Julio Diaz, Luis Collazo and Devon Alexander – and you’ll note that none of them are considered big punchers at welterweight. Brook has the kind of power to make up for any mistakes he makes in a fight against Khan, and thus he’d be someone that could potentially ruin Khan’s dream of fighting Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.
