Macklin-Heiland fight post-poned

macklin64By Gavin “Neds” O’Connor: The Matthew Macklin v Jorge Sebastian Heiland, WBC 160lb title eliminator bout has been temporarily shelved because of Macklin’s trainer Jamie Moore suffering a couple of gunshot wounds while in Spain recently.

The Macklin-Heiland fight, which had been originally scheduled for August 30th at the National Stadium in Dublin, Ireland, will eventually be rescheduled at some point I time.

With a victory over Heiland, Macklin will be looking to secure a 4th middleweight title chance. However, he’s going to need to wait a while before the Heiland fight can take place. It’s going to need to stay on the back burner.

In a statement released through Matchroom boxing Macklin said, “I am disappointed to have to postpone my fight but in light of circumstances and the disruption to my preparation it is the right thing to do.”

Macklin’s trainer and coach Jamie Moore was shoot twice in the leg in the early hours of Sunday morning in Marbella Spain as he left the home of Daniel Kinahan.

Jamie Moore 32-5-23 KOs, is a former 2x British light middleweight champion commonwealth and European champion from Salford in greater Manchester, is believed to have been the victim of mistaken identity.

Mathew Macklin’s prospects of another middleweight title challenge my now realistically be overdue too the unsavory events in Spain and the potential of bad publicity in the future. Olympic heavyweight gold medalist Anthony Joshua who was due to fight on the undercard will now fight September 13th at the phone’s 4u arena Manchester.

If Macklin defeats Heiland, he’ll become the WBC mandatory challenger to WBC champion Miguel Cotto. This could potentially lead to a possible fight against him or the likes of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez if Cotto loses to Canelo in their fight next year. Macklin will need to wait a while before the smoke clears before he eventually gets his title shot.
