garcia5645By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions has signed #4 WBA, #11 IBF Mauricio Herrera (20-3, 7 KO’s) to a contract and it’s possible that the 33-year-old Herrera could be the next opponent for WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (27-0, 16 KO’s) on March 15th at a still to be determined venue. Garcia just beat Lucas Matthysse in his last fight in September, and there’s no interest in making a rematch.

So instead of fighting Matthysse again, Garcia could be looking at a fight with Herrera. Unfortunately this isn’t a great fight. Herrera has last 2 out of his last 4 fights in defeats to Karim Mayfield and Mike Alvarado, and he hardly deserves a world title shot based on that many defeats in his last four fights. It’s like giving Amir Khan a title shot against Floyd Mayweather Jr. for losing 2 out of his last 4 fights.

The Herrera-Garcia fight would have been a decent one two years ago before Herrera was beaten up by Alvarado and Mayfield, but those defeats take a lot of the interest in a Garcia-Herrera fight.

Herrera beat Ruslan Provodnikov by a 12 round unanimous decision three years ago. However, that was before Herrera’s grueling losses to Alvarado and Mayfield. It’s very unlikely that Herrera would be competitive with Provodnikov now at this point. It would likely be a knockout loss for Herrrera if he were to take that fight.

Golden Boy is in a situation where they don’t have any interesting opponents for Danny Garcia now that he beat Matthysse. He doesn’t want to move up to 147 to try and take on the dangerous fighters like Keith Thurman.

Danny has a good chance to get a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September this year or 2015. He’s just got to avoid getting beaten by anybody. With Golden Boy matching him against the likes of Herrera, there’s a good chance that Danny will stay unbeaten until he gets a big money fight against Mayweather.
