Angel Garcia: Matthysse is getting knocked out by Danny

garcia3By Allan Fox: Trainer Angel Garcia, believes that his son WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (26-0, 16 KO’s), is going to be too much for Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO’s) on September 14th and he doesn’t see the fight as a competitive one when they meet in their pay per view bout on Showtime at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Angel has been his son’s #1 verbal supporter in fights against Amir Khan, Zab Judah and Erik Morales, and he promised all those fights would be mismatches for Danny. Angel was right about the Khan and Morales, at least the second Morales fight, but it’s going to be difficult to buy what Angel is selling for the Matthysse fight, because Garcia finally appears to have met his match in this fight.

Angel said to RingTV, “This man [Matthysse] is just an opponent, and on September 14, he’s still going to be an opponent…you just watch, Danny’s going to be 27-0, and still the undefeated champion of the world because Lucas Matthysse is going to get knocked out.”

Matthysse didn’t look so great in his last fight against Judah last April, and he’s probably lucky that he didn’t get knocked out in that fight because Judah had him hurt late. That was not overpowering performance from Garcia, and definitely not the kind of fight that you’d like to see from him going into a bout against a much more powerful and surging Matthysse.

The difference between Judah and Matthysse right now is pretty huge. Matthysse is much more dangerous and Garcia is going to have to deal with on September 14th, and he’s not going to be able to win this fight unless he fights better than he did.

Garcia looked weight drained and not the same fighter he was when he beat Khan and Morales. It might be time for him to move up to welterweight, because he looked small and not nearly as powerful as he had in those other two fights. The thing is Garcia is going to have to be powerful for the Matthysse fight because he’s going to be forced to a war early.

Angel is probably going to have Danny moving and trying to box Matthysse, but that’s not going for long. It’ll work for many 30 or 40 seconds, but once Matthysse catches him, Garcia is going to be getting hit with some major shots and it’s going to be up to him whether he can take them. He’s not going to be able to run for 12 rounds. He’ll have to stand in the pocket and try to beat Matthysse that way.
