Gennady Golovkin v Sergio Martinez fight a long ways off

martinez45By Dan Ambrose: Sergio Martinez’s promoter Lou Dibella wasn’t talking about wanting to put his fighter in with IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennedy Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) after watching Golovkin dismantle another one of his fighters Matthew Macklin (29-5, 20 KO’s) last Saturday night in Connecticut.

Dibella said this to ESPN about the idea of Sergio Martinez facing Golovkin: “It makes no sense.”

That was about all he would say, but you can read between the lines what Dibella is saying here. He has an aging fighter in Sergio Martinez, who has suffered knee and hand injuries in his last two fights, and who may not fight until next year because he’s still recovering from his injuries in his last fight against Martin Murray.

Dibella obviously knows what he has with Martinez, and he’s seen enough of Golovkin to know that putting Martinez in with him right now would be like taking lamb and putting him out for slaughter.

Martinez had his day but he’s now probably too old to have any chance to beat a fighter like Golovkin, and Dibella’s not going to put Sergio in there with Golovkin and let him get finished off. Martinez is pretty much at the end of his career, and Dibella is going to have to be very careful about matching him until he cash out with a big fight.

Dibella’s likely going to try and have Sergio milk his title by facing a couple weak opponents so that he can get some safe wins before he’s forced to take a hard fight. If Dibella matches Sergio against someone good it’s going to be Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. again because that’s a fight that’ll make Sergio a lot of money.

A fight against Golovkin won’t bring a lot of money to Sergio and he’ll only lose the fight by knockout and that’ll ruin any chances he had of facing Chavez Jr. again.
