Mayweather: I can’t be beat right now

may3321222By Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather Jr. was blunt and to the point today in telling WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s fans that he can’t be beaten at this point in his career and that he’s still far too good for the 22-year-old Canelo to defeat him.

Mayweather and Canelo met today for a press tour in Mexico City, Mexico, and as you would guess, Canelo’s fans dominated the audience in a huge, huge way.

When asked if he was afraid of losing to Canelo, Mayweather got kind of annoyed and said “Floyd Mayweather Jr. will win on September 14th. I can fight. If there’s nothing else I can do, I can fight. I just can’t be beat right now; maybe in 20 years. It’s just another day for me on September 14th. I have no worries.”

Mayweather speaks the truth. He can’t be beaten right now, especially by a fighter that’s flat-footed, has stamina problems and throws only handful of punches per round the way that Canelo does. Canelo may have been able to edge Austin Trout by throwing a tiny bit of punches per round in beating him in San Antonio, Texas, but it won’t work against Mayweather in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Canelo can’t fall back on his speed to try and beat Mayweather, because he’s slower than him; Canelo can’t outwork Mayweather, because Canelo doesn’t throw many punches per round; Canelo can’t take Mayweather deep and try to get him in the later rounds, because Canelo starts gassing out after the 5th rounds for his fights.

Canelo can’t use movement against Mayweather to try and beat him, because Canelo doesn’t move well around the ring. Like I said, Canelo is a flat-footed fighter who needs his opponents to stand there in front of him the way that light welterweight [140 lbs] Josesito Lopez recently did last year.

Golden Boy Promotions shouldn’t have rushed Canelo into this fight because he’s not ready; Mayweather isn’t old enough for him to beat him. I think Canelo is about as good as he’ll ever be, but they should have waited until Mayweather was in his 40s before they made this fight. Mayweather is a young 36.

At the press conference today, Mayweather looked like he wanted to go after Canelo right then and there, as he paced the stage back and forth while the other speakers were at the podium speaking in Spanish. Mayweather seemed to be a little teed off for some reason. Maybe it was the adoration Canelo was getting despite having proved very little in his career.
