Burns targeting Khan and Broner

By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns’ manager Alex Morrison is hoping to set up a fight between Burns and former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan in 2013. Burns would be willing to move up to light welterweight to make that fight happen if Khan agrees to the fight.

In addition to Khan, Morrison is interested in a unification bout between Burns and WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner in the United States next year if the money is there for the fight. If that fight can’t be made then Derry Matthews is a possibility, even though Burns reportedly turned down that fight according to the dailyrecord.co.uk. That’s not a fight the world would be interested in but it might do well in Scotland.

Burns vs. Khan would be interesting fight but it’s unclear whether Khan would accept that fight because he’s already taking a soft fight on Saturday night against Carlos Molina. A fight between Khan and Burns would have to be considered another soft fight for Khan because Burns has never fought at 140, and it would be a big step backwards for Khan.

It would be a fight where Burns would get a big payday, so it’s a win-win fight for him. He can destroyed and still come out ahead in this fight because no one expect him to do anything because he’s moving up in weight, but I don’t see Khan doing that fight. Khan needs to step it up after the faces Carlos Molina this Saturday and look to fight a well-known light welterweight instead of the obscure fighter like Burns.

The only realistic fight for Burns to take is for him to fight Broner because Broner actually wants to fight him. Sure, Burns will likely get knocked out but at least he’ll be stepping it up a class.
