Image: 50 Cent wants Gamboa vs. Broner boutBy Dan Ambrose: Promoter 50 Cent [AKA Curtis Jackson] is interested in matching two-time featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (21-0, 16 KO’s) up against WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) in the near future, and 50 Cent thinks it would be a huge fight like a Mayweather vs. Pacquiao type of mega fight.

50 Cent said to RingTV “Adrien Broner and Gamboa would be a fight to watch. I think that’s exciting. It could turn into the new Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao.”

For that fight to happen, Gamboa, 5’5”, will have to follow Broner up to light welterweight or possibly even welterweight to make it happen. It’s highly doubtful that Gamboa, as good as he is, can do much at 140 or 147. Gamboa would be too small in those weight classes, and it would be Jose Miguel Cotto, the 5’5” brother of Miguel Cotto, trying to fight at welterweight.

Gamboa would be at too much of a disadvantage, and I don’t see Broner moving back down in weight to lightweight or super featherweight once he makes his move to 140 or 147. As good as Gamboa is, he’s not a huge draw and it wouldn’t worth it for Broner to have to drain down just to fight someone that doesn’t have a huge fan base. Broner would be doing Gamboa a huge favor just by fighting him.

Gamboa will be returning to the ring on Saturday night against Michael Farenas (34-3-4, 26 KO’s) in a fight for the interim World Boxing Association (WBA) super featherweight title at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. If Gamboa wins the fight then the next logical step would be for him to try and fight WBA super featherweight champion Takaishi Uchiyama, a hard puncher that reminds one a little of a smaller version of Kostya Tszyu. Gamboa, who hasn’t fought in 15 months, would have his hands full with Uchiyama. That would be a real tough fight for Gamboa because he’s been knocked down by lesser punchers than Uchiyama in the past.
