Guerrero should fight Thurman or Broner to get to Mayweather

Image: Guerrero should fight Thurman or Broner to get to MayweatherBy Dan Ambrose: If WBC interim welterweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero gets a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. off of victories over Selcuk Aydin and Andre Berto, I think it’s too easy for him to be getting such an important fight like a Mayweather fight.

Guerrero should have to actually fight and beat two rising stars in the sport like Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) and/or Keith Thurman (19-0, 18 KO’s) to get an audience with a fighter as great as Mayweather.

While I think Berto was a good fighter at one time in his career, he’s not looked good in ages, and he hadn’t been in the ring for 14 months when Guerrero beat him last night.

Berto has not looked good in a long time, and he was rusty. I think Guerrero should at least have to beat Broner or Thurman to get a big money fight against Mayweather. I’d prefer to see Guerrero fight Thurman and if he can beat Thurman then fight Broner. If Guerrero gets past both of those guys then and only then should Mayweather fight him.

There needs to be a weeding out process so that there isn’t fighters that don’t have the talent or fan base fighting Mayweather and wasting his time and the American public’s time. Right now I don’t see that Guerrero has proven himself enough to be in the ring with Mayweather, and I don’t think there’s a big demand from boxing fans to see this fight yet.

That could change if Guerrero were to defeat Thurman and Broner, but in the absence of that happening I don’t think it’s worth it for Mayweather to fight Guerrero. Let him defend his interim WBC title instead. If the World Boxing Council wants to strip Mayweather for not fighting Guerrero then so be it, but they’ll only be hurting themselves if they strip Mayweather and make Guerrero the full champion, because I don’t see Guerrero as a pay per view fighter like Mayweather.

If Golden Boy Promotions, the promoter for Guerrero, attempts to sell his next fight on PPV, I’d doubt that they even get 100,000 buys. Guerrero may have won titles at featherweight and super featherweight, but he’s not had any career defining fights and he’s still unproven in my mind. Let him fight Thurman and Broner and we’ll see what happens.

I think Thurman would knock Guerrero out and give a beating. And Broner, an expert with the Mayweather shoulder roll defense unlike Berto, would likely give Guerrero a boxing lesson in beating him. I can’t see Guerrero beating either of these guys.
