Speaking with esnewsreporting.com, a smiling Broner said “Rios and me are going to have a lot of fun.”

Before that fight can get made, Broner will have to first defeat one or two of the top lightweights so that he can establish that he’s the best fighter at that weight before moving up to light welterweight to look to get a bout with Rios. I mean, Broner is already considered to be the top guy at lightweight after his win over former WBC lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco on November 17th of this month, but boxing fans still want to see Broner destroy WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns at the minimum before moving up in weight.

Broner’s promoters at Golden Boy will likely have Broner face the IBF lightweight champion, which could be either Miguel Vazquez or Mercito Gesta, depending on who wins their fight next month on the Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez fight card on December 8th.

Rios will be licking his wounds from a loss to Manny Pacquiao by the time Broner gets a shot at Rios, because Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is interested in having the Top Rank promoted Rios fight Pacquiao in April of next year. That’s a great opportunity for Rios, but let’s be serious about this. Rios doesn’t stand a chance against Pacquiao and will take a serious beating in that fight. That obviously is going to take away some of the interest in a Rios vs. Broner fight, because Broner will be getting sloppy seconds with Rios.

However, it’ll be still interesting to see the difference in how badly Pacquiao beats Rios compared to how Broner will do it. It would be really nice to see Broner going from a fight with Rios to a potential fight against Pacquiao, but I can’t see that happening to be honest. Once Arum sees Broner destroy Rios, he’s not going to want to let Broner get a chance against Pacquiao. Because Broner would be knocking off another one of Arum’s stable fighters, and that would leave on Nonito Donaire for Arum.
