Image: Berto looked poor in losing to GuerreroBy Allan Fox: HBO darling former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (28-2, 22 KO’s) once promising career appears to be sinking into the mire after he suffered another loss last night against Robert Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) in a fight that Berto was expected to win.

Berto barely used his left arm at all making me think that maybe his left bicep hasn’t healed completely after he suffered a ruptured bicep in that arm earlier this year.

As far as his left arm went all Berto did was throw weak flicking jabs from time to time that looked more like backhands than actual jabs. I didn’t see any left hooks thrown from Berto in this fight, and that used to be one of his best weapons before he suffered two left bicep tears.

Berto fought on the inside most of the fight against Guerrero and fought poorly. Berto loaded up with uppercuts, but he needed to throw other types of punches because that was his main weapon last night.

At 29, Berto’s legs looked like they had been filled with lead, as he didn’t move well at all, and seemed like a fighter much older than his chronological age. You can’t blame some of that on his year layoff from boxing, but this is pretty much how Berto looked in his fights against Jan Zaveck and Victor Ortiz before his layoff. Berto’s legs used to be one of his best assets because he was quick at moving in and out of harm to land his shots, but now he doesn’t seem capable of moving very much without hiring. Berto instead leans with his back against the ropes as if his legs too weak to carry his upper body.

Berto only threw single shots against Guerrero, and didn’t throw combinations like he used to in his mid 20s. Going from a fighter that used throw beautiful combinations to a guy that can only throw one shot at a time has really hurt his game. Even in throwing shot at a time, Berto isn’t very active. He throws a shot and then waits a long time before throwing another shot. That’s not going to work against the top fighters in the sport, and he’s going to have to do something about his inability to move around the ring.
