Was it too soon for Dulorme to be facing Abregu?

Image: Was it too soon for Dulorme to be facing Abregu?By Dan Ambrose: #3 WBA welterweight contender Thomas Dulorme (16-1, 12 KO’s) looked lost out there and confused in getting blown out by #10 WBC Luis Carlos Abregu (34-1, 28 KO’s) by a 7th round TKO defeat at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino, in Verona, New York. This was supposed to have been a winnable fight for the highly hyped 22-year-old Dulorme.

After all, Abregu had already been beaten soundly by Tim Bradley two years prior and had struggled to beat 2nd tier fighters like Richard Gutierrez and David Estrada. Abregu had been knocked down in a win over Gutierrez, who was past his best years. Dulorme should have been able to take care of the 28-year-old Abregu if he was really all that some boxing fans had thought he was.

Things went to pieces quick last Saturday for Dulorme with him being knocked down in the 3rd round after getting hit hard by a big right hand from Abregu. It wasn’t as if Dulorme didn’t have plenty of warning that he was going to get tagged hard in the 3rd because Abregu had been hitting him with the same overhand right hand from round one, and Dulorme had done a poor job of adjusting to it by trying to block the shot, duck or stay father away. But the punch landed and I don’t know that Dulorme ever fully recovered from that knockdown.

Dulorme looked uncomfortable in the 4th, 5th and 6th rounds, and you could tell he wasn’t going to be able to last long with Abregu hitting him at will with right hands.

In the 7th, Abregu finished off Dulorme after knocking him down with some hard shots. Dulorme got back up and was ready to continue fighting but his corner threw in the towel causing the fight to be halted.

The way that Dulorme got dominated by Abregu it’s hard to imagine Dulorme being able to come back from that to beat other top fighters. I think the loss to Abregu really told fans where Dulorme is in terms of talent. I don’t think he has the chin for the welterweight division and I don’t see that changing in the future. Dulorme might be better off moving down to 140 where the punchers are quite as powerful as the 147 lb class.
