Khan to Brook: You still need to prove yourself against a top 50 opponent

Image: Khan to Brook: You still need to prove yourself against a top 50 opponentBy Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan wasn’t about to smother unbeaten Kell Brook (29-0, 19 KO’s) with praise after seeing Brook beat an over-matched opponent Hector David Saldivia (41-3, 32 KO’s) in the 3rd round to earn a shot at the winner of the Devon Alexander vs. Randall Bailey fight.

Khan was short and too the point by summing up what Brook needs to do before he’ll fight him, saying on his twitter “Well done, Kell. Did what he had to. Time to move up in game. He’s been sayin this for past 10 fights. Before you think of fight me or Ricky [Hatton] PROVE yourself [against] someone in the top 50. lol.”

I hate to say this but I completely agree with Khan on this. Brook needs to actually fight someone that is deservedly ranked in the top 50, not someone that one of the sanctioning bodies has put there for some crazy reason. Saldivia looked like he didn’t belong in the top 50 tonight, let alone in the top #3 in the IBF rankings.

Brook said after tonight’s win over Saldivia that he wants to beat Khan and knock him out, but how can Brook do that if he’s not fighting anyone good? I’m not high on Khan but I can understand his point of view here. Khan at least has taken on some dangerous opposition during his career in fights against Breidis Prescott, Danny Garcia and Marcos Maidana. The only thing thing that Brook has to show for himself after eight years as a pro is his fight with Carson Jones, and that’s not enough to deserve a shot against Khan.

If Brook can beat the Alexander-Bailey winner in early 2013, then I’ll say that he deserves a shot against Khan but until then he doesn’t belong in the same ring.

I don’t know why but both of Brook’s promoters during his career have matched him against strictly weak opposition. It’s too bad because Brook should have fought the likes of Saldivia early in his career not in his 8th year.
