Haye not interested in fighting Fury, only Vitali Klitschko

Image: Haye not interested in fighting Fury, only Vitali KlitschkoBy William Mackay: Former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (26-2, 24 KO’s) doesn’t want to fight unbeaten heavyweight contender Tyson Fury (19-0, 14 KO’s), even though it would mean a lot of money for Haye if he were to do so. Haye mentioned a couple of reasons why he’s not interested in fighting Fury and David Price, saying to IFilm London “They’re too big and too young. I’m just a cruiserweight.”

Haye continued on about Fury “As for me fighting him [Fury]? No, I’m only getting back in the ring for Klitschko, No one else.”

You can read this a couple of ways. The Vitali fight would be much bigger than a fight between Haye and Fury or David Price, because it would be a fight that would have global interest rather than just local. There would be money to be split between Germany and the UK for a fight like this instead of just the Uk. Additionally, Haye won’t take as much criticism if he were to lose to Vitali than he would against someone like Fury, who isn’t a champion yet and may not ever get to that point.

Haye would lose a lot if if he were to fight Fury and get beaten up, stopped or out-pointed. It’s a fight where Haye could have a really tough time due to Fury’s huge height and reach advantage. There’s no question that Haye is the faster and much harder punching fighter, but he could have a problem with Fury’s weight and reach in a fight like this.

Fury wants to fight Haye, but he’s going to have to be content with fighting other guys if he wants to make a name for himself.

As for Haye fighting a smaller guy to keep getting paychecks, Haye told IFilm London that he doesn’t want to put himself through all the sparring that he’d have to do to get the money. He doesn’t like the punishment he takes during his sparring sessions and wants to limit this for only the big fights against the Klitschkos.

If Haye does get the Vitali fight, it’ll probably be the last time Haye fights unless he beats Vitali. If Vitali easily defeats Haye then the door will be closed permanently for Haye in fighting the Klitschkos in the future. He’s already been soundly beaten by Wladimir Klitschko, so he can’t go back there in that direction.
