Image: Danny Garcia vs. Zab Judah almost done for 1/19By Dan Ambrose: Whether you like it or not, WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (25-0, 16 KO’s) is poised to fight 35-year-old former two division world champion Zab Judah (42-7, 29 KO’s) in January of next year, according to Fightype.com. The Garcia-Judah fight, if you want to call it that, is almost done for January 19th in a fight that will be televised on HBO.

Of all the possible contenders available for the fight with Garcia, such as Brandon Rios, Lucas Matthysse, and Ajose Olusegun, this is the fight that Golden Boy Promotions wants to set up for him. It’s a pretty poor fight given how shot Judah is, but Golden Boy appears to be betting that the casual boxing fans and to a certain extent the hardcore fans will want to see this match.

It’s obviously a mismatch because Judah hasn’t beaten a really dangerous fighter in many, many years. He has wins over guys like Vernon Paris, Kaizer Mabuza and a HIGHLY controversial win over Lucas Matthysee, but Judah’s last legit win over a quality opponent came seven years ago when he defeated an in his prime Cory Spinks by a 9th round TKO in February 2005. Judah’s wins since then have come against a lot of 2nd tier and fringe level contenders, as well as the KO win over IBF champ Mabuza and the controversial win over Matthysse.

Contrary to what some boxing fans are saying about the Judah-Garcia fight being a good fight, it won’t be a good fight. It’ll last as long as it takes for Garcia to catch up to Judah and knock him out with a left hook to the head. It’s not going to be competitive because for that to happen Judah will have to be able to take Garcia’s big left hooks and right hands, and he obviously won’t be able to. It’s safe to say that we’re going to be seeing Judah doing another chicken dance like the one he did in his knockout loss to Kostya Tszyu in November 2001.

Once Garcia destroys Judah, Golden Boy will have to make a decision about whether they’ll have Garcia vacate his World Boxing Council 140 lb title in order to keep him from fighting Matthysse and likely getting beaten or taking their chances and facing him. It doesn’t like they’re eager to put Garcia in with Mattysse for some reason, perhaps because Matthyse knows how to block a left hook, and has a great chin. When you take away Garcia’s left hook, he’s pretty much the same fighter that had his face rearranged in his first fight with Erik Morales. He becomes very average, just another short-armed fighter.
