Bunce: Calzaghe would beat Ward

Image: Bunce: Calzaghe would beat WardBy Scott Gilfoid: There seems to be a dispute among boxing fans about who would win in a fight between a prime Joe Calzaghe (46-0, 32 KO’s) and WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward (26-0, 14 KO’s). A lot of Brits seem to favor Calzaghe beating Ward for some reason, whereas non-Brits from other parts of the world pretty much all see Ward schooling Calzaghe badly and handing him his first loss of his career.

British writer Steve Bunce is another one of those people who think that Calzaghe would beat Ward, saying to ESPN.co.uk “Let’s get one thing straight: A peak Calzaghe – the one that walked through Jeff Lacy and did jobs on Mikkel Kessler, Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr – would beat any version of Ward. It is not even up for dispute.”

I think Bunce is dreaming here. It is up for dispute, because Calzaghe struggled badly in beating Kessler, the same fighter that Ward TOTALLY dominated in his win over the Dane in 2009. It was scary how easily Ward because Kessler. Just looking at the differences in between Ward and Calzaghe against a common pretty much tells you that Ward easily beat Calzaghe if given the chance to fight him. And Calzaghe’s 12 round split decision win over Hopkins in April of 2008 was highly controversial with many boxing fans feeling that Hopkins got jobbed in that fight. I wouldn’t have chosen Calzaghe’s highly questionable win over Hopkins as an example in trying to prove that Calzaghe was better than Ward.

Ward is faster than Calzaghe, the stronger puncher and the much better inside fighter. Ward would have gotten in close with Calzaghe and ended up battering him with ease.

I think it’s pretty much academic at this point that Ward is the better fighter of the two by far.

Calzaghe really didn’t beat anyone really good during his career and his best win over Hopkins was more of a case of him getting a controversial win than in actually deserving the strap.
