Abraham vs. Sturm a likely scenario for the two German based champions

By Allan Fox: According to German boxing sites, there have been several names that have been mentioned as possible opponents for WBO super middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (35-3, 27 KO’s) to fight for his next bout in November or December of this year, but the one that likely will get the fight is WBA Super World middleweight champion Felix Sturm (37-2-2, 16 KO’s).

Sturm will get the fight because he’s a very popular German based fighter, and he’s someone that the German promoters won’t have to worry about the German fans getting pumped up for the fight and showing up in high numbers.

Sturm has already said that he wants the fight, and if he can take on Abraham instead of an arguably much tougher opponent in WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, Sturm will be getting off a little easier because Abraham’s sloppy fighting style will be a lot easier for Sturm to adjust to than fighting the much more schooled and dangerous Golovkin. Sturm is going to have to fight Golovkin if he doesn’t get another bout.

Without his unification bout, Sturm would have to defend his title agaisnt Golovkin. Sturm was given permission to fight a unification bout against IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale on September 1st, and that’s what he’s doing. Sturm has to win that fight before he can start thinking about a fight against Abraham, though.

The other option for Abraham is for him to fight Mikkel Kessler. That would be a good fight and their mutual promoters at Sauerland might like it. However, they also might not want to see one of their fighters lose because it would potentially mess one of them up in terms of popularity and future paydays. For this reason, the Kessler-Abraham fight might not happen.

Sturm would be a tough fight for Abraham because he stays on the outside and he throws a lot of jabs. When Sturm does throw his power shots, he’s makes sure that they’re straight down the middle rather than wide looping shots like the ones that Abraham typically throws.
