Image: Golden Boy probably wishes they hadn't matched Ortiz against LopezBy Allan Fox: As soon ad the Victor Ortiz vs. Josesito Lopez fight was first announced, you could tell immediately that this fight had the likelihood of ending badly for the 25-year-old Ortiz, because he’s not a consistent fighter and he tends to deteriorate mentally when put in grueling fights.

Sure enough, Ortiz went to pieces last night in getting stopped at the end of the 9th round against Lopez at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The loss ruins Ortiz’s hoped for September 15th pay-per-view bout against WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez.

Ortiz’s promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, really blew it by making the mistake of matching Ortiz with his fragile psyche against a relentless fighter like Lopez. That just wasn’t smart. It’s not that Lopez is a big puncher or that he’s particularly fast, because he’s neither of those things. However, his heavy pressure style of fighting was more than enough to wear down Ortiz last night and cause him to quit on his stool after the 9th round, saying that he had suffered a possible broken jaw.

The timing of his quitting came after Ortiz had taken a lot of punishment in the 8th and 9th rounds when things were starting to look bleak for him. Ortiz was ahead in the fight on all three judges’ scorecards and he didn’t have to do a whole lot in the last three rounds in order to get the win, yet he still quit.

In hindsight, you have to wonder what Golden Boy Promotions [GBP] was thinking by matching Ortiz against a good fighter like Lopez. Just one look at Ortiz’s fights against Marcos Maidana, Lamont Peterson and Floyd Mayweather Jr. told you all you need to know about whether Ortiz could handle it mentally. He couldn’t, and when things started getting rough for him in the 9th, he chose to quit rather than taking the pain in order to get to the final bell.
