Image: Schaefer: Saul Alvarez will fight Quintana or Austin Trout nextBy Dan Ambrose: Now that Victor Ortiz has been eliminated from the possibility of facing WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez on September 15th in a pay-per-view bout in light of Ortiz’s 9th round stoppage loss on Saturday night against Josesito Lopez, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says he’ll either match Alvarez up against unbeaten WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (25-0, 14 KO’s) or former WBO welterweight champion Carlos Quintana (29-3, 23 KO’s) next in September, according to Dan Rafael at ESPN.

MGolden Boy might want to reconsider their idea of making Alvarez’s next fight a pay-per-view bout because Alvarez vs. Quintana or Trout aren’t PPV worthy fights. Quintana hasn’t really done much since pulling off a huge upset in defeating Paul Williams by a 12 round decision in February 2008 to capture the WBO welterweight title. In their rematch, Williams knocked Quintana out in the 1st round in the same year.

Since that loss, Quintana has won four out of his last five bouts, losing to Andre Berto by an eighth round TKO in April 2010. In his last fight, Quintana defeated fringe junior middleweight contender Deandre Latimore by a 6th round stoppage in May. Trout is a lot better options, but even he isn’t a thrilling match because he’s still largely an unknown fighter among casual boxing fans.

You can’t expect boxing fans to want to dish out big bucks to see Alvarez, a fighter that most casual boxing fans don’t have any idea of who he is, facing another little known fighter. It just seems like a really stupid idea of Golden Boy. What they should be doing is getting boxing fans hooked on the guy by having his fights shown on regular HBO, and then later making them PPV after he’s captured a fan base.
