Image: Golden Boy interested in Matthysse-Maidana boutBy Allan Fox: If WBA World light welterweight champion Marcos Maidana (31-3, 28 KO’s) can get past unbeaten welterweight contender Keith Thurman (17-0, 16 KO’s) next month on July 21st in their 10 round fight in Cincinnati, Ohio, Maidana could then be facing 140 pound contender Lucas Matthysse (31-2, 29 KO’s). That’s a fight that Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is interested in putting together.

Schaefer told RingTV “We discussed with his [Matthysse] team a fight with Marcos Maidana…That’s assuming Maidana can get by Keith Thurman, which is no sure thing…assuming Maidana does get by Thurman, then the fight everybody, of course, would love to see is in the showdown between Marcos Maidana and Lucas Matthysse.”

This would be a great fight matching two fellow Argentinians up against each other. Matthysse made easy work of former WBC lightweight champion Humberto Soto last night, stopping him in the 5th round. Matthysse dominated a very good fighter and wore him out with body shots. It actually too easy for Matthysse.

In facing common opponents, Maidana struggled in beating DeMarcus Corley by a 12 round unanimous decision that many boxing fans felt should have gone to Corley in 2010. The next year, Matthysse fought Corley, knocking him down eight times in stopping him in the 8th round in 2011. In addition, Maidana was soundly beaten by Devon Alexander in 10 round unanimous decision loss in February of this year. Matthysse also lost to Alexander, but many boxing fans felt that Matthysse should have won that fight which took place in June of last year. Alexander won a 10 round split decision over Matthysse while fighting in his home state of Missouri.

None of this will really matter if Maidana can’t get past welterweight Thurman next month, and I have a strong feeling Maidana is going to lose that fight because Thurman can punch just as hard as Maidana but with better skills.
