Image: Danny Garcia's father calls Khan "Overrated" at press conferenceBy William Mackay: Angel Garcia, the father of WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia, got on Amir Khan’s case during today’s press conference in Los Angeles. Angel wasn’t really trying to upset Khan; he was just speaking his mind about what he thought of him as a fighter, and Khan didn’t like hearing his opinions.

Angel said this as quoted by fightnews.com “When Danny starts hitting you what are you going to do 1-2 and roll out all night? Come on, Man, you’re overrated.”

Angel is talking Khan’s habit of throwing too punches and then immediately running away, either to the side or straight back. However, Angel could have added more than this, because Khan doesn’t just roll out [run away]. He likes to grab his opponents by the back of the neck and pull down on their heads to get them in a bent over position where he then leans on them with his elbows, chest and chin to keep them trapped in that position. The referee is supposed to warn against this kind of move and then take points off if Khan fails to stop. However, I’ve never seen Khan get docked points once for this this. Khan also likes to shove his opponents.

So if he’s not rolling left, right or backwards, he’ll likely give a nice shove to Garcia to keep him punching. Again, this is something that Khan should be docked points for because it’s not boxing, it’s fouling. The referee hopefully will be on his J-O-B on July 14th so that Khan doesn’t get away with the head pulling, shoving and headlocks without losing points.

Khan later said “It’s a shame that his father will not be taking the punches that his son is going to suffer for…I will go in and knock Garcia out.”

If Khan does get a knockout, I hope he’s not holding Garcia down with his left arm while hitting him with his right like Khan did in stopping Zab Judah. Again, the referee needs to have his eyes wide open in this fight because Khan has a few moves that he likes to use and the referee needs to stop them to make sure this is a clean fight. Khan is insisting on drug testing for this fight, which is all well and good. However, if Khan is allowed to foul, then what’s the difference? The fight needs to be a fair bout without fouling and without performance enhancing drugs.
