Image: Roach: I got two fighters that can beat Mayweather - Khan and PacquiaoBy William Mackay: Freddie Roach believes that his fighters Amir Khan and Manny Pacquiao BOTH can beat undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. if given the chance to fight him. Roach has said this in the past, but now after seeing Mayweather struggle to defeat Miguel Cotto recently, Roach is even more convinced that Mayweather is ready to be taken by his fighters.

Roach said this to HBO’s Jim Lampley on his show The Fight Game with Jim Lampley “You know Floyd had a great fight with Cotto. I think he [Mayweather] looked very beatable in that fight, and I think I have two fighters that can beat Floyd – one sitting besides me, and Manny Pacquiao. And he’s definitely the fight we want, of course, and if we can get him in the ring, we’ll be very happy.”

While I agree that Pacquiao would be more than a handful for the 35-year-old Mayweather, who appears to be slowing down in his last couple of fights, I don’t agree that Khan is someone that can beat Mayweather. I don’t understand how Roach can be even talking about Khan on the list when Khan was just exposed by Lamont Peterson in a 12 round decision loss last December. Khan looked horrible from the 3rd round, and needed to run, shove, pull down on Peterson’s head and put him in headlocks to try and escape his constant pressure.

If Roach is going to include Khan as a fighter that can beat Mayweather, maybe you would take him a more seriously if Khan had at least won his last fight. It just makes Roach look ridiculous to be talking about Khan as being someone that can beat Mayweather when Khan couldn’t even beat Peterson. Khan still hasn’t avenged his loss to Breidis Prescott, who knocked him out in the 1st round in 2008. And Khan’s win over Marcos Maidana is controversial in my mind because of how the referee Joe Cortez kept pulling Maidana off of Khan after he had him hurt in the 10th round. I still think Khan would have been knocked out in that fight had Cortez let Maidana blast away at Khan on the inside rather than stopping the action when Maidana was working on the inside, and then restarting it in the center of the ring.
