Image: Wladimir says his height advantage won't benefit him against MormeckBy Eric Thomas: IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (56-3, 49 KO’s) is staying on message that his height, reach and weight advantage over the smaller 5’11” 215 pound challenger Jean Marc Mormeck (36-4, 22 KO’s) won’t be an advantage for him this Saturday night in their fight in Germany. Wladimir wants boxing fans to believe that being 6’6″ against a short fighter like Mormeck won’t help him win the fight.

Wladimir said “As I mentioned before, it’s not really always an advantage, the difference in size, because the shorter guy is trying to get to a closer distance and to be effective right there. And the taller guy has to keep the distance.”

Of course, it doesn’t make any sense that Wladimir keeps stubbornly insisting that being bigger isn’t a big advantage for him because historically the bigger fighter wins most of the time unless it’s a fighter who’s not very good. Wladimir IS good and he’s excellent and using his height to his advantage against shorter guys. it’s just kind of strange that Wladimir just won’t call it the way it is.

If he feels he’s got to dissociate himself with blatantly obvious things like his size being an advantage for him against tiny heavyweights like the 5’11” Mormeck, then Wladimir maybe needs to stop signing on for these mismatches and look to face better guys. But the fact of the matter is, being 6’6″ against a short 40ish fighter like Mormeck is a big advantage. That’s just a given. It’s kind of odd that Wladimir keeps persisting in saying it’s not.

It’s like he’s saying don’t believe your eyes, believe what I’m saying. He obviously wants boxing fans to see his fight, but a certain percentage of fans are turned off by this fight because Mormeck has won three consecutive questionable decisions against 2nd tier opposition going into this fight. That tells you that Mormeck isn’t someone that should be fighting for a title. If he can’t beat 2nd tier fighters without controversy, then how in the world can he deserve a fight against Wladimir? And how is it that he can do well enough to win? He can’t. He’s going to lose because he’s too short, too light and too old. Wladimir won’t admit it but on Saturday you’ll see Wladimir dominating with his height and his reach, and it’ll just make his earlier statements seem all the more disingenuous.
