Włodarczyk vs. Mormeck on Feb 9 in Equatorial Guinea

wlodarc2By Jason Kim: Former WBA/WBC cruiserweight champion Jean-Marc Mormeck (36-5, 22 Ko’s) will be moving back down to cruiserweight on February 9th to challenge WBC champion Krzysztof Włodarczyk (47-2, 33 KOs) at the Equatorial Guinea in a large soccer stadium. The 40-year-old Mormeck just finished fighting IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in a losing effort last March.

Mormeck, 5’11” was much too small for the 6’6” Ukrainian and he ended up getting stopped in the 4th round. The money had to have been really good for Mormeck, and it’s unclear whether he’d have made the same kind of money had he stuck it out at cruiserweight during the last three years. Mormeck moved up in weight from cruiserweight after losing his WBA/WBC titles to David Haye in November 2007.

Fringe contenders to Wladimir Klitschko’s titles: The Ignored Contenders

Image: Fringe contenders to Wladimir Klitschko's titles: The Ignored Contenders2012 was quite a busy year for Wladimir Klitschko. The quality of the opposition he faced was  poor as  Jean Marc Mormeck, Tony Thompson and Mariusz Wach are hardly considered exciting match ups. Amongst the supposed mismatches the Polish warrior Mariusz Wach was the sole surprise, in a lopsided 12 round beating he showed a granite chin and seemingly unbreakable resolve.  He could be the fighter to watch for 2013.

Klitschko also lost a great friend and mentor in Emmanuel Steward. Nothing I can say could begin to capture the magic behind this man, and his effect on Wladimir,Lewis and Hearns in the past. The loss of a mentor is painful, although this was shown to be a motivator for Wladimir and also Jonathan Banks who won a surprise 2nd round KO against American prospect Seth Mitchell.

Afolabi vs. Mormeck on November 23rd in France

Image: Afolabi vs. Mormeck on November 23rd in FranceBy Jason Kim: WBO interim cruiserweight champion Ola Afolabi (19-2-4, 9 KO’s) will be fighting 40-year-old former WBA/WBC cruiserweight champion Jean-Marc Mormeck (36-5, 22 KO’s) on November 23rd, in Paris, France. Afolabi, 32, is coming off a controversial 12 round draw against WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck last May in a fight that many boxing fans felt should have gone Afolabi’s way.

Mormeck is coming off of a 4th round TKO loss to IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitshko from last March in Germany. Mormeck, 5’11”, simply didn’t have the height, reach or weight to compete against the much bigger and stronger Wladimir. But now that Mormeck has gotten a payday fight against Wladimir and unfortunately lost badly, he can do the smart thing by moving down to cruiserweight, at least for this fight, and seeing how can do against a very good Afolabi.

Thompson not impressed with Wladimir’s win over Mormeck

Image: Thompson not impressed with Wladimir's win over MormeckBy Allan Fox: Heavyweight contender Tony Thompson (36-2, 24 KO’s) didn’t see anything in IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko’s performance against Jean Mormeck last Saturday night that impressed him in the slightest. Wladimir, 35, stopped the short 5’11” Mormeck in the 4th round, limiting him to only four punches landed in their fight in front of 50,000+ fans at the ESPRIT arena, in Düsseldorf, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.

Wladimir clinched 15 times in the 1st round against Mormeck

Image: Wladimir clinched 15 times in the 1st round against MormeckBy William Mackay: I personally feel that a fighter clinching more than 10 times per round as clinching in excess to the point where it’s dulling the fight and getting in the way of action. In last Saturday’s fight between IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko and Jean-Marc Mormeck, Wladimir clinches a whopping 15 times in the 1st round alone. That’s an astronomical number to be sure, but that wasn’t the only round in which Wladimir initiated a huge amount of clinches.

The Klitschko’s are not to blame

Image: The Klitschko's are not to blameBy Marcus Sales: Yes I agree, the heavyweight division is rather dull. I watch DVDs of Ali’s classic contests with Joe Frazier and George Foreman and am saddened I was not alive to see such epic events unfold before my eyes. I am also a little young to have witnessed a prime, young Mike Tyson strike the fear of god into every man, woman an child in the late 1980’s. I am not however too young to appreciate what I have before my eyes right now.
