Image: Kell Brook back in action on July 7th, but likely against another soft opponentBy William Mackay: Undefeated welterweight contender Kell Brook will make a quick return to action on July 7th, according to World Boxing News. The fight will be taking place in the UK rather than the United States and Brook’s opponent is probably not going to be any of the big names – Marcos Maidana, Shane Mosley and Paulie Malignaggi – that Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn is hoping to bring over to Britain.

Maidana they feel is the one that they possibly bring over. However, it’s going to take a lot of persuading and a really big offer to get Maidana to the UK to fight Brook because Maidana has already said that he doesn’t want to fight at welterweight after moving up briefly for a fight against Devon Alexander last month. Maidana didn’t look nearly as good at welterweight compared to how he’s looked fighting at 140. As far as Mosley and Malignaggi, Hearn won’t get those guys even with his best offer. More than likely, Brook is going to have to settle for another fringe contender or a 2nd tier guy like the ones he’s been mostly fighting his entire career.

Brook needs to get a lower level fighter that won’t test him over the long haul because Brook struggled after the 7th round in his recent fight against the non-punching Matthew Hatton, who is technically considered a contender, but who is probably more of a 2nd tier guy. Brook needs to work on his stamina and head movement because he ran out of gas in the Hatton fight and was very easy to hit. Had it been someone with stamina and power in there with Brook, he would have lost the fight. He needs to prove that he can fight well for 12 rounds, not just 7. Hearn needs to keep Brook on the soft diet for another year or two so that he can fix his stamina issues, learn to move his head and try to develop some power somehow. Brook doesn’t punch hard enough and would be way out of his class against the better welterweights in the division like Victor Ortiz, Mike Jones and Andre Berto, to name just a few.
