Maccarinelli has been fighting at light heavyweight recently after suffering a string of bad knockout losses to big punchers in the cruiserweight division. Thus far, Maccarinelli has done well at light heavyweight but he wants to pick up the British cruiserweight title because it’s something he’s always wanted to do but never got around to it.

Maccarinelli told the BBC “Winning the British title is something I’ve always wanted to do, and my father wanted me to win the belt as well. I wanted to win it for him.”

With then huge power that Maccarinelli possesses, he could have won the British title many times over in the past 10 years if he had set his mind to it. He had better things to do, namely winning and the World Boxing Organization cruiserweight title. He held that title from 2006 to 2008 when he lost it to David Haye by a 2nd round knockout.

Maccarinelli will have a huge size, power and experience advantage over the 26-year-old McPhilbin tonight. You might as well throw in a much bigger talent advantage as well, as McPhilbin isn’t anywhere close to being as good as Maccarinelli. The one thing McPhilbin does have his heart. He’s a tough fighter that won’t give up and he’ll really bring it tonight and try and put pressure on Maccarinelli. That could pay if he can stay on his feet long enough to land something big on Maccarinelli. It’s doubtful, though. Maccarinelli is facing a guy that is leagues below him and he’ll likely blast McPhilbin out in a round or two unless McPhilbin has a granite chin and an ability to take powerful body shots. Not too many fighters can take Maccarinelli’s body shots, so it’s going to be a real tough ask for McPhilbin to last more than four rounds at best.
