Vitali will be 42-year-old if he fights on for another couple of years. While that is old for a heavyweight, it falls well short of big George Foreman, who struck around the game until he was 48 before hanging up the gloves.

Perhaps more important than when Vitali is retiring is the news that he badly wants to fight former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye. It’s pretty much a done deal that Vitali and Haye will be fighting at some point in the New Year.

Haye wants the fight. Haye wants the payday, and wants to prove that he’s better than he showed in his humiliating 12 round decision loss against Vitali’s brother Wladimir Klitschko.

All Vitali needs to do is make sure he gets by his next opponent number 15 ranked WBC contender Dereck Chisora in their fight on February 18th in Germany. That shouldn’t be too much of a tough task for the 6’8” Vitali, as Chisora was handily beaten by the 6’9” Tyson Fury earlier this year and had problems with his size and work rate, if not his power. Vitali is a lot better than Fury, so this should be a clear win for Vitali.

Vitali’s main objective in fighting Haye is to knock him out and shut his mouth for good. It burns Vitali up that Haye was able to talk so much trash about him and his brother Wladimir for the past two years but not have to pay for it in the ring. Wladimir fought defensively and never really went after Haye in any concerted way to try and get a knockout.

Vitali is going to make a point of trying to take Haye out, which may or may not work out in his favor. Haye does well against fighters that come at him trying to slug. This could backfire on Vitali if Haye is able to stun him or flurry on him. It’s possible Vitali, with his slow hand speed, could end up getting taken out in the same way that Enzo Maccarinelli was in his 2nd round knockout loss in March 2008.

Haye, 31, is a lot younger than the 40-year-old Vitali and has just as much power as him if not more. But the speed factor could make be Vitali’s undoing in this fight. Haye is going to be able to hit cleanly with pot shots and if he can hurt Vitali, you can bet Haye will try and bury him with a flurry of punches.
