Image: Froch ranked No.2 by WBC, could get rematch with Ward soonBy Scott Gilfoid: Former WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch was soundly beaten by WBA super middleweight champion recently in the Super Six finals bout.

Despite having lost his title, Froch was only dropped to the No.2 position in the World Boxing Council rankings, right behind No.1 ranked Anthony Dirrell (24-0, 21 KO’s).

What this means for Froch is that he could get a rematch in the near future if he keeps winning. Of course, if he wins his next fight, which is likely going to be against IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute, it will hardly matter what his ranking is by the WBC because he’ll have the IBF strap to lure Ward into another fight with him if that’s what he really wants to do.

If Froch gets beaten by Bute in their proposed two-fight deal for 2012, then you’ll likely see Froch’s ranking by the WBC plummet to the point where Froch may end being ranked as a fringe contender.

In that case, it will require some desire on Ward’s part to want to dip that low in the rankings to bother fighting Froch again.

Right now it’s still too early how this is all going to shake out, but there are clearly better fights out there for Ward than fighting a guy like Froch who he beat with ease.

Ward’s next fight will likely be against Anthony Dirrell, and depending on how well Bute does against Froch, we could see Bute facing Ward sometime next year. Ward would be better waiting until the smoke clears from the two Bute-Froch fights before deciding on facing the winner.

Ward has plenty of good fights in 2012 against both of the Dirrell brothers and maybe someone like George Groves or James DeGale. It would be fun to see how easily Ward handles both of those guys next year. I suspect they’d both do a lot better than Froch did.
